McDonalds Food Poisoning, Vomit and Hives, and Heart Beat in Left Ear

edited February 2008 in Everything Else
So on Monday night at 11:30, I went to McDonalds to pick up a bite to eat. I got two cheeseburgers, medium fries, and a medium coke. After I ate it, there were no sudden urges to puke, and I felt a little sick to my stomach, but nothing serious. Then at 5am I wake up and start vomiting and I do that till 10am till nothings left but bile. After that, I'm feeling OK, not great, but OK. Then at 2 in afternoon, I break out in hives all over my body and I run to the hospital. They give me a shot of steroids and a couple pills of benadryl, the hives go away, and then I feel completely fine. Now, I hear my heartbeat in my left ear and I have a headache on the left side of my skull, which kinda freaks me out. So if anybody has had this happen before or anything similar, it'd be great to hear.

  • Up until the hives, it sounds like standard food poisoning or a stomach flu. Hives indicate an allergic reaction usually. As for the rest, I have no idea.
  • The heartbeat in your left ear is probably just blood pressure. I often get that when lying in bed on one ear for a while. Resonance~ such a lovely thing.

Consult a doctor. Could be food poisoning or it could be a rather strong allergic reaction. If the prior you want to make sure others are warned.
    Afterthought: you eat McDonald's often?

  • Is this really the right place to ask for medical advice? See a doctor, dude.
  • Yeah, I'd start assuming bad news bears when you can hear your heart beat in your ear.
  • If you do not eat meat often you may have developed an allergy to it. It's what happened to me.

    1. GO TO A DOCTOR

    2. It was an allergic reaction, not food poisoning. What allergies do you have?

EDIT: Heartbeat in the left ear and a headache on the left side of the skull? Fucked if I know. The hives went down with steroids, so that means there was an allergic response of some kind. The other stuff, well, I don't know.

EDIT 2: Also, it's not lupus. It's never lupus.

    Unless it's lupus.
  • No body expects the lupus... inquisition.

Being some one who is Hard of Hearing and has had a lot of ear problems, I've experienced similar situations.
The Headache is probably swelling of your brain, it could be part of the reaction to the steroids, when I had steroids for an ear problem, headaches where common.
As for the Heart Beat in the Ear, it probably your artery by your ear pumping faster due to steriods, or it could be related to headache, since your body is trying to move blood around.
Just take some Ibuprofen and get a good nights sleep.

Headache on one side, plus the sound of pumping blood on one side, is also a sign of increased blood pressure.

  • Just see a doctor and post what they say.
  • When I went to the doctor, he said it could be anything. The hives started receding even before I received the benedryl and the steroid shot, but other than that, all of sickness is gone. I feel completely fine now, but as for what caused the outbreak, the doctor doesn't know any more than me. I've though about getting an MRI, but I don't know if that's really necessary.

  • I agree that it sounds like a mid-level allergic reaction. That is what happens to me when I find a new allergy. To date, I have found that I am allergic to Zithromax, Z-pack, dimerol, freshwater fish, saltwater fish, shellfish, mushrooms, and sulpha based meds. I'm also lactose intolerant, but my stomache won't mess with me too much unless I eat ice cream, or drink milk; processed dairy doesn't bother me that bad.

How could you ever assume something was food poisioning when you have a list of allergies that long (and probably growing). The McFish or whatever was probably too close to your burger.

  • To my knowledge, all I'm allergic to is dust mites, and they've never done anything like this (vomit and hives).

That's one benefit of growing up on a farm surrounded by filth, disease, and crap: I'm not allergic to anything.
