Emily's Work

edited February 2008 in Everything Else
Shill Time, Shill Time! (Heehee, just kidding. I'm just very proud of what we got accomplished and want to make noise about it.)

The tech start-up I work for just had their beta release! There is a photo app, a travel app, and a blogging tool with this version, and as the souls that frequent these forums are particularly geektastic, I look to you for the most insightful, informed and utterly merciless criticism about our project. Unfortunately you won't get to see my animation until the 3D component is released, but I promise you that when the day comes, you'll be able to dance the Hare Hare Yukai like Haruhi in your browser window. 3D sosauce team has a few FRC comrades working on the games, so when we're up, it'll be a happy day for a number of us in Beacon.

Sign up and I'll friend you. And seriously, what do you think?

This is one of the default models I was working on. She has no clothes in this picture and her skin texture isn't refined yet. Stay 'tooned for more.

  • How did you make the model?
  • Maya! Love the Maya! LoveLOVELOVE. Maya is my girl-friend.

Except for the crashing when used on a mac...then I curse Maya roundly, and cry.

    And The Girl's poly-count is under 3,000 - she's pretty low rez.

  • Man... That's the one sad part about enterprise IT. I can't really show off any of my work... ^_^*
  • Ack! Anti-alias, anti-alias, and polygon count aye. The face looks very good. The rest of the body is hard to judge due to the many blocky edges.

And no clothes? What are the gray... areas... *ooooooohs*
  • Yeah, well, it's a crummy preview render, so it's anti-aliased all to hell.

She doesn't have her poly clothes, but I made textures to cover up her naughty bits for demos. Sorry to disappoint.
Are you perchance a fellow 3D animatator, Nineless?
  • She looks like she's annoyed at us. LOL.

I never dabbled much into 3D animation but it looks cool to me. I can't wait to learn 3D programs!
  • No clothes? Looks like she's wearing something...
  • Did you use polys or NUUUURRRRRBBBSSSSSS for the hair?
  • Are you perchance a fellow 3D animatator, Nineless?
Nope, sorry. I, like Scott, prod code (eventually), hoping it will do what I/the client want(s). I have messed around a bit with 3D modeling when I was still playing NFS3 a lot (NFS3 > NFS 4 AND NFS5). I modded a pre-modeled Ferrari F50, then I gave up and just played the game some more. Now I want to reinstall Windows, NFS:HP(3) and NFS:HP2(6 iirc). Those games were awesome. That, and one of the kids a few doors away (ab)uses Maya since an architect moved into the house two houses further. He made a neat looking bridge, he's very good at it, and a jet plane with environment, looked neat.
She looks like she's annoyed at us. LOL.
I thought you was wondering what the "Start a new discussion" link did.
No clothes? Looks like she's wearing something...
    It looks like that yes.

Wait, since when are feet naughty bits? You sayin' I'm into that!? *GASP!*
  • She doesn't have proper toes in this version, and she feels self conscious about it, so she has little texture booties. Basically this is the Nude version only with a texture on that looks like undergarments.

So the hair: I can't use NURBS for game modeling, so she's 100% Polygon Modeled. Sometimes I build off of NURBS, but I always have to convert to poly so the game engine can make sense of it. Someday, I'll post some more detailed non-game models. I have a nice dragon (^-^)

Now stop looking at The Girl and go look at the Sosauce.com site! Go!

Personifying your creation is a little disturbing, but other than that I think you should keep the white hair and gray eyes ~_^

I did! I had to allow it in NoScript, but then all the cool stuff popped up! The vids are nice. (The savanna pogoing was a little weird, but a green wall can't replace everything perfectly. Also, from what I can see, it's a LiveJournal, Flickr, Facebook (, etc) melting pot currently, no? Looks great, awesome idea. But I have no use for it, seeing as I have no use for the separate things either, heheh.
  • I do think the site is really cool, but I also don't really have a use for it. I do use Facebook and Flickr, but as long as there is no way of somehow maybe syncing my information or being able to talk to friends in Facebook or look at their photos through SoSauce, I don't really see any use for it. Same thing goes for Flickr. People often bring up the argument that Jabber or Gtalk is much more superior to MSN or ICQ, the same way that your site might be superior to Facebook. But as long as most of my friends use Facebook, MSN and ICQ I don't really have much of a choice in what to use.

What would make the Site absolutely awesome would be having such a function. If I could have all my friends from Facebook and all my photos from Flickr in one place, that would be absolute best. The other functions, like the travel feature, would be quite useful to me. But I don't see myself going away from my notebook and using your service just for that one feature.

Your site does have a really neat design and is much more easy to use than i.e. Facebook. I would love to use this service, but it just doesn't do enough for me. Thats just me, the site is awesome.
  • Wow Kiwi_bird, you're building upon my hearsay and slander. Don't draw conclusions without confirmation. Though I do agree hearsay and slander doesn't really encompass 'educated' guesses.
  • What else do I have to build on? ^^
  • You really don't have to leave Facebook and the rest. Our site is more about the writing and the photos than friending people, so we are really a different type of network. However, if you think that our site is better, invite your pals. Since beta just started, we don't have many members, and as long as we don't have many people, it will be hard to get MORE people. There's no import function at the moment, but you can invite friends very easily. You can still use your old accounts to talk to people, but if you invite them and if our site is actually easier to use, maybe people will stick around and start using it. You can get all your favorite pals in the same place. When you think about it, it's kind of like the "early adopter" plight. Those that use something at its early stages will have a tough time because they are ahead of the curve.

I can use the personal example of GTalk and Gmail. I was like "all my friends are on aim" and "I already have an email account." Rym said, "But this one is better!" And so eventually I gave it a try and it was. So now, I tell my friends to come talk to me on Gtalk and if they don't have a gmail I invite them.

Because I'm in high school, and I really do have A LOT of free time, I'm going to try out your site and invite all my English speaking friends. I'll see how it goes for 2/ 3 months.

About your personal example: If none of your friends join or are to lazy to, you're fucked.

  • I signed up and trying out now. Not bad and I love the design. It's fun to use just for your own pleasure and when it grows the whole social thing will follow.

The only thing is I already have Facebook and stuff. Another thing is I like being on a new territory as well.

Sigh! I'm no help at all! :P
  • Let me ask you the following questions:

    1. Who is this targeted to?
    2. Why would these people want to use this?
    3. what does a writer get for publishing on the site?
    4. Can a writer ad advertising?
    5. Will the site have advertising?
    6. How will the site make money?
    7. Why would someone want to use this when so many social networks already exist?
    8. What's in it for the members?

Like Digg, it is the members that add value to a social site. Without members your site is nothing. You need to give the members a reason to belong and be active.

I have a Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace and a number of other social network memberships. I use none of them. I see no value in it for me. I have met far more people with similar interests by having my own website.

    1. People.
    2. Everything in one spot.
    3. Why would they want anything for their own stuff?
    4. Why would they, do you put advertising in your family photo album?
    5. Why would it? Not every site needs to be cluttered with waste-of-space advertising.
    6. Why should it? Not every site wants to make money of its user base.
    7. Everything in one spot.
    8. Everything in one spot.

    Silly questions, silly answers.
  • I haven't spotted it yet, but is there a feature to automatically import posts from an rss feed into a journal? I already have a blog but I'd still like to check this out.

The proportions on the figure look a little strange, the hips look like they are too far down. That might just be because of the clothes you tacked on or the low rez-ness of the picture.
    Oh, and I'm signed up.
