Is Rym not a video gamer anymore? This sounds ominous!

edited June 2006 in Video Games
In last Thursday's episode, Rym was busting on Scott for playing too much Half Life 2. He then went on to say that since he had his new job, he hardly plays video games anymore. This is really strange coming from someone who loves his DS so much and who wants to get a Wii. Rym is probably too young to be getting the middle aged guy why-am-I-playing-video-games-when-I-could-be-doing-something-productive syndrome. This is otherwise known as productivity guilt. But it is ominous nonetheless. If Rym truly does start to feel this way, I predict that many things will happen at once:

1) Geeknights will go down to once a week.
2) Rym will get married.
3) Rym will start yelling at kids to get off his lawn.

Now again, Rym is a young guy so it could be nothing and sometimes he says stuff just to give Scott a hard time. But as someone who has gone through this transformation, I've seen the warning signs. We should all listen to the show very closely from now on for further clues.

  • Rym is still going to Anime Conventions so Rym still has that kid inside of him. That third prediction is funny.
  • I love video games, and I don't intend to stop playing them anytime soon. I just tend to play them in cycles, and I'm easily distracted by other pursuits. I'll bike or read some manga before I'll play a game. I also tend to do the majority of my gaming on the DS when I have downtime, where no one would notice and it doesn't affect the rest of my life.

Being such a varied geek, I'm more thinly spread amongst the geekeries. I lean more toward the anime geek crowd than the rest.
  • Even with pan-geeks like myself and Rym and Scott, you still have a few preferential geekdoms, and yes, you do have to budget your time. I mean, if we all had infinite free time, we'd play every game ever, watch every good anime ever, read every good book ever, etc. Being a geek is really more about the way you incorporate your interests into your life, and not so much about how much actual time you spend doing your various interests.

Also, for you younger listeners, enjoy your non-real life time. Once you get into the real world, you simply don't have the time you used to. You can manage pretty well, but it won't be 100% the same.
  • The only one he actually will do is tell kids to get off his damn lawn!

I think when we all old and retired we'll all just play video games/read/do other geeky stuff. Wii will be like this lady. Sorry I've been sitting on this pun for weeks.

  • I've known about Old Grandma Hardcore since she first made the rounds on the net long ago. She is truly an grandma to be reckoned with, of awesome.
  • Awesome, indeed.

I had not heard of OGHC before. Now that I have, a little bit of my faith in humanity has been restored.
  • She lives in Cleveland?! Holy crap! I've never heard of her before today.
  • There is a whole bunch of old people like OGHC. I think she's the first to have a blog written about her. Someday I wish to be alot like her.
