  • It was the mix of always the latest software for very little effort and having to customize things before you used them. You also never had to upgrade. The kernel was regularly being updated. Down side was that you had to be ok doing a lot of text file editing.

Sounds like Gentoo back when it was not the suck. I don't have the time or patience for that shit anymore.
  • If you guys want a fast server to download from, grab it off of my campus server. It's not listed on the main Ubuntu website so few people are using it.

    Or just use the torrents.

    Or just use the torrents.
They're not much faster than the regular downloads.

  • Okay, I have managed to install with the alt CD and Pulseaudio has fixed some of the problems with audio and external sound cards and the flash doesn't freeze firefox but takes up a ton of cpu. Now for the bad.
Where has 73mB of my ram has gone? As a result, my system is grinding the hard drive a lot and it's going to be a while before I get that ram upgrade I wanted. As a result, pulseaudio stutters when things get tough and the realtime kernel doesn't work so I can't fix that.

They are when there's a rush on the mirrors. I never got faster than 10 k/sec on a mirror, and torrent went past at 45 k/sec

Ubuntu, as it's popularity has increased like other OSes, has become what people lovingly refer to as a "memory hog." Sure it's the best of the memory whores, but it ain't running on no 256 of ram anymore. It's 512 of RAM or get out.
  • I have 512MB and gutsy ran fine on it. I'm going to get a 2gb ram upgrade soon but until then I'm in windows and I miss a lot of the stuff I'm used to.

Oh wow, I have 1 gig and I was just guesstimating that you needed 512. Yeah, hardy chugs a lot more than Gutsy.
  • If you don't have the ram for Ubuntu, use Xubuntu.

I'd rather just go back the Gutsy but I'll stick with windows for a bit.

Xubuntu is bloated now too. A fresh install booted at 375 megs of ram used. It's really just ubuntu for people who like XFCE for some bizarre reason.
  • If you don't have at least 512MB of ram, what the hell is wrong with you?
  • Maybe try Debian if Ubuntu is too heavy.
