MP3 player of choice

edited April 2008 in Technology
What mp3 player(s) do you guys have?

Why did you choose said player?

I used to have a 4gb Cowon D2. I got it cause it was (relatively) cheap and could play a ton of different filetypes. I eventually got rid of it because something got screwed up and it stopped reading ID3 tags from MP3 files.

  • iPod, because it's the best thing out there right now.

I have a Zen Stone Plus I got for Christmas, I'm not a big music guy but love podcasts and podiobooks, so this is great! I just slap it in there and drag and drop files, it's tiny too. It also has FM radio for whenever I run out of stuff to listen to.

    Why?
Do you enjoy being restricted to the filetypes it supports, the small screen, the lack of a radio....the lack of anything other than music and video playback?
Oh, and not to mention the price....

Yes, I'm evil, I know. Of course, I now have Rockbox on it, which makes it even more awesome.

EDIT: I don't agree with zeehat that it's the best out there. I however didn't know that when I bought mine years ago. Still <3 it though, looks very nice.

  • iPod touch because I'm posting this from mine right now ^__^
  • I just looked up RockBox. Hot shit! If it's going to let me play OGG and FLAC, then I'm definitely installing it.

I can deal with file types, it's called a converter. And basically all other things out on the market are complete shit in one way or another. The iPod is not some super player which I love to death, it's merely better than the rest- currently.

The biggest problem, though, is that RockBox is pretty much only compatible with semi-old ipods.
  • I own a first-gen iPod nano, and I have to say I've been really impressed. I'm really not in it for anything other than music playback, so the small form factor and solid state-yness of it really appeals to me.

That said, if I was going to buy a new portable right now, I'd have to take a long, hard look at the 4GB Zunes. The subscription service is really nice and the interface is pretty sleek, not to mention the build in radio support. XNA2.0 now offers development options on the Zune, so I'm sure we can expect to see some cool applications in the future, too.

While we're on the topic: I've got no love for the new nanos (bad form factor, video a bad idea) or classics (too big for my tastes). I dig the screen real estate and input on the iPod Touch, but after using I was simply left thinking: "the only way to make this thing useful for anything other than music is to put a phone in it." I imagine this will change once the iTunes marketplace is in full swing, but again, with Zune dogging its heels it's still up in the air.

It's a 5G 30GB Video. Which came out the same time as myself's 1G Nano. But at least they have builds for it. The iPod Linux project lags about 2 gens behind these guys.

Question to myself(the user): I know that when I installed the iPod Linux firmware I had to erase my iPod's harddrive. Is it the same with RockBox?

  • An iPod, because of how it integrates with Itunes.

Ehm, iirc you do not have to erase the HD, but I'd personally erase it and then build a directory structure myself, Music folder with subfolders according to band name, with subfolders according to album name with the songs in there. That way you don't have to use the database, though you might want to use that anyways and load it into RAM since you have a spinning disk. Flash has fast reads so I don't have to worry about that.

How is the touch not useful for video? (I haven't used it, I'm just wondering)
  • 80GB Zune, because I wanted a big HDD and it has more features with a better interface than an iPod.
The only problem I have is that my time in linux is cut short, since there is no program to sync it.
  • I use a 8 gig creative micro drive. It's not bad and was surprisingly cheap for a 8 gig.
  • I use a generic mp3 player which costs as much as my headphones (Each £45). Sort of a half way between here and an iPod. I looked at the Zen Vision M but the iPod just works and there are a lot of linux programs for transferring files and stuff.
  • I have a 30 gig video iPod and I love it. Don't ask me why I chose it, because I have no idea.
  • I like the Archos mp3 players cause they let me use my directory tree to navigate my music.

I had one too, until it was stolen out of my fucking bag about 6 months ago. I then, bought a 3rd gen. Nano, which I am quite pleased with. I have debated whether or not to get a touch, but not enough is going for it yet.

Ah, sorry, I should have delved a little further into that statement. I meant: "outside of the normal PMP functions" (namely audio and video). Truth be told, it's a rockin' piece of hardware for video. Outside of that, though, you're limited to browsing the web and checking your email at hot-spots, which is nice, but not $300-$500 worth of nice. Again, I'm really hoping for something good to happen now that the SDK is out, but right now? It's simply not worth it in my opinion.

Edit to fix prices and grammar.

  • I'm using my PSP as a MP3 player, and It does the job alright. If I get a 2 gig memory stick, I don't think I would want any other player.

Can the iPod touch be hacked in the same way as the iPhone to allow custom apps?

Don't worry about it, most posts on this forum over a few sentences all have the edited by thing next to the posters name. Just shows you're being considerate.

This is because Apple started encrypting the firmware.

  • I am still using the original iPod nano. If my iPod mini hadn't broken, I'd probably still be using that. I think the tides will change next January when my phone contract is up. I'm definitely going to get some sort of awesome phone, and the iPhone is a possibility. Really, as much as the iPhone has its problems, it has one major advantage over everything else. That advantage is that if I get an iPhone, I can carry one less device. I prefer smaller things, but if one big thing replaces two things, that can't be beat. If I don't get the iPhone, I will probably just keep using my nano.

I would get a non-Apple player. In fact, I would really love to get a non-Apple player. The problem is that none of them have the awesome podcasting support. Also, none of them have the great user interfaces.
  • If I could pick any player, it would be the Archos 605 Wifi. But realistically speaking I'll probably end up with an 80 or 30 GB Zune in the near future. Right now I've got a 1gb Creative Zen Muvo

The one issue I have with the iPhone is that it's is really, really big. It's too big to fit in my pocket comfortably. If they had a thinner version, I would be much more apt to buy one.
  • Can the iPod touch be hacked in the same way as the iPhone to allow custom apps?
It can actually! It's a ludicrously simple process that involves navigating to a website. For the purposes of this discussion I bypassed it, as there's always a risk in hacking your firmware like this.
  • I might consider a Zune if I start using VMware (after getting a RAM upgrade, 4gb of ram is surprisingly cheap).

True. For the price of the touch, you could get something like an Archos with 30-60gb of storage plus a bigger screen...and all that jazz.

Though true, I keep forgetting about the PSP... For under $200, it's actually not that bad of an idea, especially since it can play games (but for the sake of keeping this on the PMP track, let's not debate about whether or not you think the games are good).

If we can bring handhelds into it then a DS lite with an Evolution CycloDS card and an 8GB SDHC Micro card would be the way to go. Moonshell will give you decent video that fills the top screen and can play mp3s from folders. Also makes a flipping excellent manga reader.

Scratch that. Someone managed to fit a 60gb ZIF hard drive (Used in the iPod, 1.8") into a Eeepc. That with a 9-incher and I'm set.

  • I use a 5th-gen 30 GB iPod, mainly because I am already a Mac user, and the combination of iPod and iTunes on a Mac is smooth as silk. The 30 GB was the most amount of space I could afford for an iPod at the time. Now I wish I had waited a little longer to buy, because the current gen iPod has 80 GB of space for the same price that I paid for my 5th-gen. :(
