Stupid Firefox keeps freezing

edited April 2008 in Technology
Every bloody time I download something, it freezes. In order for it to work again, I need to kill it, use ctrl+alt+delete to end the firefox.exe task thing (I believe that's the proper tag for it..) and then reboot it. I can restore the session, but it's no use if I need to download some homework from my email to my hard drive.

Any way to fix this permanently?

  • Start Firefox in safe mode? Remove all extensions and plugins? Backup your bookmarks and destroy your profile? Switch to Firefox 3?
  • Alright, I'm pretty sure I know how to backup bookmarks, but how do you put Firefox into safe mode?

Yeah, I have been having a lot of problems with firefox recently. So bad in fact, that I'm using Safari 3.1 for windows. Firefox has been slow, uncooperative and dumb. It is also sucking up way to much memory and CPU cycles for a web browser. It has just gotten to clunky. The worst part is that it is slow to start up and is loading pages a lot slower than it should.

In windows, check the Firefox thing in the start menu.

If you don't have that, go into the properties on your firefox icon and add "-safemode"* at the end of the target.

*- not 100% sure on this. I'm gonna go check.

EDIT: Yeah, I have no idea what to put at the end of the target....so just go scrounge around your start menu.

  • I've always had one particular problem with Firefox - Every once in a while, It just randomly decides to act like I just re-installed it, and I loose everything, all my bookmarks, feeds, preferences, all of it.

Happened to me. One was not amused.

This will happen if your profile is busted. Really, most Firefox problems are profile problems. However, most non-tech Firefox users do not understand the profile system, so it makes it very frustrating. Try these things.

Go to the Windows command line.
cd to the directory where Firefox is installed.

This command will show all the different things you can do with Firefox on the command line
    firefox.exe -help

This command will start Firefox with no plugins/extensions/etc. so you can figure out what the issue is.
    firefox.exe -safe-mode

This command will launch the profile manager, so you can see what profiles you have, and which one is the default.
    firefox.exe -ProfileManager

Really people. Firefox 2 is a piece of shit. Firefox 3 might still be beta, but it's the way to go. If there are no extensions or plugins you absolutely need that are not yet updated for Firefox 3, you should switch.
