Guitar Hero IV

edited May 2008 in Video Games
Ugh, Guitar Hero IV is going to be Activision's response to Rock Band. They are adding an updated drum kit (with cymbals) and vocals to the game along with create a character and a alter a song mode. Let the game war begin.

To be honest with you all, I am looking forward to the Aerosmith expansion for Guitar Hero III and the Rock Band Wii edition more than a new Guitar Hero.

I doubt you're gonna get much argument from anyone on Activision's side. It's a sleazy move that could ruin the franchise. Also, I highly doubt create a song is going to win it for them (how the hell is guitar gonna work!?!)

However, I can't give it the "Worst Rock Band Ripoff of the Week Award."

It's because you can play Smoke on the Water with less than 5 notes and they know that that's the extent of the majority of their fanbases' knowledge about playing music XD

Like Guitar Hero kiddies know Deep Purple...

Also, Drum Kit looks decent, not worth buying a new box of crap for Rock Band fans, though

  • I bought GH3 Wii. From here on out I am boycotting all plastic instrument games until there is one definite winner. People were talking about Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD as a standards war. No, this is where the real battle is.

  • I honestly like the drum set. I like how it's more like Drumfreaks (with the cymbals up top and whatnot).

Though, after the failure that was GH3, I'm not getting any GH games ever again, unless they do something godly.

As a drummer, I honestly SHOULD embrace the fact that the cymbal placing is a bit more "realistic", but the fact that you can't adjust the position of said cymbals is bothersome. Also, for some reason the width (or lack thereof) of the set concerns me, along with the fact the the foot pedal is not mounted to ANYTHING. I assure you, it WILL move around if it isn't mounted.

Come to think of it, the whole thing just looks downright flimsy and looks like it'll topple over with any sort of usage.

  • What they need to come out with is Slap Bass Hero.

Rock Band is definitely teh awesome, if only because it's ACTUAL multiplayer.
  • I wrote a post on my blog about this yesterday actually, but I'll summarize here.

Guitar Hero is no long relevant. What they are doing for IV is making it Rock Band. The only new thing is the Guitar Hero Studio (aka the custom song maker,) but you can only make your own versions of songs already in the game. And I don't think its anything that people really want, only the really hardcore players are ever going to really use it anyway.

I think they would have been better off keeping Guitar Hero about the guitar, and the guitar only. And what would have made Rock Revolution good is if they had added Keyboard Revolution into it, at least then they would have been offering something no one else was.
  • Keyboard Revolution into it, at least then they would have been offering something no one else was.
Yes! I'm all for putting in a keyboard. Aw man....Pink Floyd on Rock band with a keyboard...so awesome.
  • The biggest problem will all of this is the highly possible incompatibility between the peripherils like it happened between the PS3 version of Rock Band and the Guitar Hero Guitars. With the GHIV drumkit having five pads instead of four, this doesn't really look good to me. I like rhythm games, but I am not willing to shell out 250+ bucks for 3 different drumkits. One thing I am missing the most whenever I think how cool one song would be to have in Rock Band is a second guitar track. I hope somebody implements that for a few songs that would very much profit from it.

In any case I think that Konami is a bit to late to the party and I think that the market will not support three different games in that manner. That they are switching around the fret colors from the established model that appear in Rock Band and Guitar Hero will not help them either.
  • Here's a thought. Nintendo has been making all sorts of controllers lately, such as the Wii Fit pad and the Wii Wheel. If Nintendo made an official Nintendo set of plastic instruments, and put out a game for it, the Wii would immediately dominate the genre. They could then force all the other companies to produce games that use their set of standard instruments rather than all these different incompatible things. Nintendo has already done some rhythm game action with Mario DDR. Let us make rock bands comprised of Nintendo characters.

Microsoft or Sony could do a similar thing, and also become the system that is the king of rhythm games. I just think Nintendo is better suited for it because they have a history of making hardware peripherals besides just normal controllers.
  • Nintendo would have to do more then make the hardware standard for plastic instruments to succeed in the genre. They'd need to seriously get their act together on downloadable content. I think that is one of the reasons why Rock Band has taken off like it has, is that every week there are at least 3 new songs (except that one week with Still Alive, but that was a free song so can't really complain about that week.)
  • Personally, I'm looking forward to this. Since I don't own any consoles, I haven't been able to get into Guitar Hero until GH3, since it came out for Mac and PC in... Late December, I think. Since Rock Band has yet to become available for a platform that I can play on, the possibility of GH4 also becoming available for the Mac/PC is one that I'm really hoping for.
  • Hmmm, I think I prefer that Konami Rock Revolution judging from the video. Top down > 3D perspective in this case.

I think GH 4 is such a huge waste of money for the publisher. Sure, there are good things about it ... but by now a lot of the people interested in this type of thing have Rockband. That and they are fighting for my living room space! Maybe they are going for all the people who haven't shelled out the money for Rockband yet and are envious of their friends who have. Maybe they are going for the hardcore GH fan base...I don't know. Anyway, I agree with Kiey's comment. GH should have spent all that money on making their guitar peripherals awesome. Add new features that the players would only dream about. They could have made a Keyboard Hero or something .... but don't give me something I already have. When I heard that this game was announced, I felt like this whole music game thing is so huge it could be branched off into a whole different console. Ok, that's not likely but I was just so shocked at the fact that the publisher's of GH would pump so much money into a clone. A clone that would also add more plastic to my living room!

  • Well if they can manage to get Guitar Hero 4 down to Australia any time near when Rock Band deems us worthy, I'd probably side with GH (mainly cause I have a Yamaha electric drum set and it'd be cool if I could just use that).
  • I'm actually looking forward to this, mostly b/c I haven't bought Rock Band for the Wii yet. IMHO, GH III has much better guitar parts than Rock Band ever did. As long as they don't nerf the guitar, I think it'll be pretty cool.
