Good older PC games

edited June 2008 in Video Games
I've been looking for good, older games lately. My comp is quite old, but can play HL2 well enough. Any genre goes, really, but I'd like more non-obvious answers, so get those games a bit more off the mainstream, please.

  • Download DOSbox and get the original X-Com.
  • You want answers.... but did you ask a question?
  • Hostile Waters
    Grim Fandango
    Battlezone 1+2
Beneath a Steel Sky & Indiana Jones FOA (free to download)
    GTA 1 + 2 also free
    Open Steam and browse
  • Day of the Tentacle isn't bad if you like old games.
Zork isn't bad if you like antique games.

Pool of Radiance and the other Gold Box SSI games.

Old games don't have to be THAT old, HL2 isn't exactly DOS era. XD

One other option is to get some emulators (PSX, N64, SNES etc).

    Also:
    • Deus Ex
    • Icewind Dale 1/2
    • Make Rym happy and start playing Quake 2 Lithium Deathmatch

  • Beyond Good and Evil. I got it on Steam last weekend, and it is most awesome. It controls really well for a port from a console game.
  • Sopwith.
  • A few I used to play are: Raptor call of the Shadows, Commander Keen series, and the original duke nukem.

Got any good PS or N64 emulators? Honestly, on most of the ROM sites I go to, I can't find shit for either console.

    Regardless...my suggestions:
    - Starcraft
    - emulators
    - not much else, since I'm really not a PC gamer....oh well.
  • I use Project 64. It works really well with my PS2 controller.

Mario Kart64. Good game if you just wanna chill out.

ePSXe or PCSX for PSX, Project 64 for N64, and PCSX2 for PS2 (need REAL beefy CPU for that).

I have fond memories of Mario Kart 64 was a Xbox 360 controller.

  • I'm personally offended that no one's mentioned Fallout or Fallout 2 yet. Those games literally changed my life. Read these reviews and believe.
  • Funfetus beat me to Fallout, so I second that. I'd recommend Arcanum too, if the Fallouts work for you.
  • Download GameTap.

I used to play alot of those DOS games, because my first computer had a 64 MHz processor. I remember getting that around 98 or so. My brother gave me Quake and a CD full of abandonware games.

Edit: Wow, the CD has Windows 1, 2, and 3.11.

  • LucasArts's Loom. I played that sooo much.
I'll also second Day of the Tentacle.
  • PCSX2 for PS2 (need REAL beefy CPU for that)
Is that usable now? What constitutes beefy?
  • Well, it being REAL beefy, real in capital letters, that probably doesn't work. I remember trying it out before, but I might be wrong.

Hey, anyone up for a game of Yuri's Revenge (FTWDK: A Red Alert 2 expansion pack)? We'll probably need to use Hamachi but it should be playable.

Sure, I'd love too. The main problem is that I live on the west coast... OF EUROPE! I also can't find my Yuri's Revenge CD (it might pop-up somewhere (I did find my RA2)) and I'm not even that good at Red Alert 2.

I do want to try anyway.

I live in England, should be ok. You can get Yuri's revenge cheap or off bittorent.
Wednesday night, say, 8PM GMT alright? Maybe get some Skype action on.

Instructions for those wanting to join in.

I will create a Geeknights Europe Hamachi network sometime soon; Americans are free to join but timezones can be a bitch.
    Edit: Created, Name:"Geeknights Europe" Pass:"mrperiod"

  • I don't know if you would call this a PC game, Mac game or neither, but I would have to say Oregon Trail.
  • Wow....No mention of Civ?? If your PC can't run Civ 4, run Civ 3. (And there's a good chance that if it'll run HL2, it'll run Civ 4. Maybe not well, though.)

I'll second Grim Fandango, big-time. The Monkey Island games are also excellent. The Indiana Jones adventure games that Lucasarts put out don't get a lot of mention, but I also enjoyed them a great deal. The recent Sam & Max adventure games put out by Telltale (and also on GameTap, I believe) are quite good and don't have high requirements. One more off-beat (and a little twisted) adventure game recommendation: Sanitarium.

Yeah, I miss the good ol' days of computer adventure games....
  • Is there any way to run Grim Fandango without need for a joypad?

Civ is still a current game, doesn't exactly fit in this thread. There is a box set you can buy that has all the Civ games (1 through 4) and the Civ card game.

I'm not sure if I'll make it. Give me some more time to figure this out (like an hour or so if possible). I'll try to do this as fast as I can.

Edit: it says that the "Geeknights Europe" network does not exist.

  • ok, created "Geeknights Europe" (deleted "GeekNights Europe"). Going to go find my copy of RA2+YR.
  • As someone else with an older PC (Read piece of shit), I can recommened the following:
Morrowind. (This game has eaten hours of my life)
GTA III and Vice City (If your PC runs HL2 okay, these should be fine)
Deus Ex (But for the love of Darwin, avoid the sequel like the plague)
    Fallout 1 & 2
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 1 & 2
    Freelancer
    Planescape: Torment
    Call Of Duty 1
  • Deus Ex
    Hell yes!
