Digsby

edited June 2008 in Technology
I'm thinking of trying Digsby as I've been looking for a simple desktop email writer and some of the features may get my sister to finally stop using MSN Messenger.
The reason for me starting a post before trying it is that I have heard tell that it can be a resource hog, anyone care to confirm or deny?

Comments

  • It's a HUGE resource hog, but if you have more than about a gig of ram, it's not going to be too bad.
  • I've been using it after I saw Scott put a twitter post up with it. As Neito said, it's uses a lot of resources (currently 60MB). But I have 2GB of RAM and I like having applications integrated. Also, if you use Facebook or Twitter a lot, the notifications are nice.
  • What about CPU power? I have 2.5gB of ram but only a 1.8ghz single core (ram being cheaper and easier to upgrade). If it is so big then what are the startup times like?
  • I use it on my fancy new Windows desktop at home. I don't notice that it hogs resources, but then again this machine is a beast. It is definitely the best IM client short of Adium in terms of features and interface.
  • Still waiting for the linux version.

Tell me about it. Then I can finally use the same client on all machines.
  • I've never noticed it hogging. It's handy for web-surfing and chatting at the same time, because it pops up a floating chat box that doesn't interrupt your work.
  • Is it better than Trillian, Pidgin, Miranda? I've tried all of them and I end up going back to single based IM clients.

Yes. It is. It's just a bit heavy at times.
  • I use it at work now and it does feel a little sluggish but I am using a shitty machine. I have the problem where I can't seem to get onto MSN chat but it can check my Hotmail account fine. I have checked their forums and it seems to be a reasonably common problem, more to do with peoples work set ups rather than their actual MSN accounts. Might go searching for a solution again one of these days.

Go to the website and click the download button. What do you see?

It's been like that forever. n.~
  • I would dump Trillian but I can't remember any of my IM client passwords and they are all saved in the software.

Use the recover password options on the appropriate websites?

I no longer have the email addresses associated with some of those accounts. My ICQ number is only 6 digits long.

You know that ICQ and AIM are the same protocol now, right? To the point where you can add friends on IQC from AIM and vice-versa.

No, I did not know that. I keep the client running in my tray but keep it on invisible mode so I can get work done.

Consider me sold. Just switched to Digsby and it's pretty fucking awesome.

edit: I don't know anything about how applications use memory. But by monitoring memory usage from the task manager. If Digsby is minimized to only the system tray it will use the 50 plus megabytes of memory. But if I also leave it minimized to the taskbar it uses less?

  • Why is there still no Mac/Linux support for this shit? I use it on my Windows box, but now that my Windows box is out of commission for a while, it's horribly inconvenient not to have it.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a Linux client that isn't Pidgin?

This fucking thing is great. I use Windows exclusively, so the no Linux support thing isn't a problem, and twitter is finally convenient enough to use, at least when I'm at home (No Smartphone).

The new Ubuntu default IM client is epiphany.

Meh, I just use Pidgin now. Gave up on Digsby long ago.

    Sweet. I'm upgrading tonight.

Pidgin has a few bugs that are just plain intolerable, namely broken user block and file transfer features.
  • Wait, it's not epiphany, it's empathy. I forget. It's something like that.
  • Whatever, it'll show up when I upgrade.
