  • Hating gay people isn't an action? I guess that's a different argument, but if you teach your kids to hate gay people, and they wind up hating gay people, you have accomplished the action of teaching hate. Maybe I'll move that to its own thread.

Everyone will teach their kids some idea that other people will find controversial. Just because you don't like what a person thinks and what they teach their kid to think doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to teach their children to think that way. Having a thought, belief, or feeling is NOT an action. While one can actively teach a thought or belief, these are still words - protected by freedom of speech. You cannot legislate based on that.

You cannot legislate based on that.
There's a mile-wide gulf between "cannot" and "should not." I'll totally agree with "should not," but history has shown time and time again that many, many cultures are perfectly willing to deny freedom of thought and freedom of speech. It's possible, with enough conditioning, to change the way people think. Granted, it needs to be extensive and consistent (like training a puppy), but it can be done. The question of whether it should be done is totally different.

I'm going to move this to its own thread. If you want to keep at it, come on in. I'll type about this until my fingers hurt.

EDIT: Here it is. I summarized some things and epic'd a few points.
