Firefox 3

edited June 2008 in Technology
Who has it? What do you guys think of it?

Personally, I don't really like it that much. Why? Nothing is that groundbreaking to me.

The difference between FF 1.5 and 2 was big for me. Mainly the fact that it could restore sessions, but still. After session restore came out, I couldn't imagine browsing without it. With FF3 being out, I can easily imagine browsing on a browser without an awesome bar or any of the new shit that FF3 has.

Oh also, FF3 is supposed to have better RAM usage. Currently I'm getting readings that are no better than what my FF2 got...<_<

  • On my macbook I used Safari instead of Firefox 2 because it was so much more responsive (and it looked nicer). Firefox 3 improved enough for me to use it.

    Compare a week-old Firefox 2 session to a week-old Firefox 3 session, tho.
  • It's great, but I've already been using it for weeks.
  • What is everyone's opinion on the Firefox 3 back button? I made it small originally but it has kind of grown on me.

Dunno about you guys, but I shut down my computer each night...even so, I usually end up restarting my browsers throughout the day for various reasons.

Since the early days of FF2, I've had a chrome tweak that hides the back and forward buttons unless there's actually a site to go back to. So the big buttons barely even show up on my Firefox. I also have them as small buttons. But personally I liked the old ones better...
  • Adblock Plus needs to get it's shit together.

I've actually heard a lot of people complaining about it. What do you find wrong with it?

    It isn't there.

Don't use that stupid search within Firefox. Adblock Plus is at version 0.7.5.5 and it's good to go for Firefox.

  • Yeah got it myself.

Ok, quick word to the wise- If pages like Google, Wikipedia and YouTube are showing bold font, there is probably an issue with your fonts, this is easily solved in Vista (and I'm sure other incarnations of Windows) by going to control panel -> Fonts -> File menu -> Install New Fonts option.
From in the "install new fonts" dialog box that will show up, press "Select all fonts" and "Install" this will start the process to reinstall all the fonts in your fonts folder, I know this might seem a bit much, but IMHO it's much better to reinstall all the fonts now than have a whole bunch of issues later, just confirm that you want to replace the fonts and restart FireFox.
    Done, dusted, sorted.
  • The problem I have now is replacing Google Sync which is being discontinued :(

Anyone know of a good replacement?

For those of you who want to continue to use Firefox 2, we'll maintain support for old versions of Google Browser Sync through 2008. After that, we can recommend a few other products that scratch a similar itch. We hope that one of them works for you:

Mozilla Weave [labs.mozilla.com] from Mozilla Labs—Offers bookmark and history synchronization across computers.

Google Toolbar for Firefox [toolbar.google.com]—Store your bookmarks online and access them from any computer online.

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer [addons.mozilla.org]—Synchronizes your bookmarks across all computers where it is installed.

    Regards,
    The Google Team
Foxmarks is good. I used that before I knew about Google Sync, and since I never got Google Browser Sync to work I just stuck to Foxmarks.

Question: Can/could you use your bookmarks in, say, Opera? Or Internet Explorer when you use Google Browser Sync?

As for Firefox 3. Like Sail I've already been using it for some time now. And yes, the awesome bar is indeed awesome. If alone for the ability to select URLs word by word (Hold down Ctrl alongside Shift and the Arrow key to select in steps of words instead of steps of letters). I think I'll find a nice Theme. Orbit yellow ain't getting updated.

That's ok, it never worked 100% properly. The reason they are discontinuing it is because Mozilla themselves are working on a solution to this problem. I say use the del.icio.us extension until the Mozilla sync solution comes out.
  • I checked a few of the links in the artical, but non give what Google sync did, they may do book marks, but none of them will do open tabs, history and passwords :(

And Apreche, how didn't it work for you? I never had a single problem with it apart from when I had installed the plug-in on a second computer while another was still connected then hit sync. but that is user error not plugin error >.<

It was just sort of really slow. Also, it would sync the bookmarks toolbar folder improperly. It worked, but it wasn't smooth and easy.
  • I'm sorry you had problems with it, for me it is the single best plugin for firefox after Adblocker. Hence my desperation to find another tool that will do the same.
Reading up on Weave gave me hope, but registration is closed because they have too much load on their servers.
  • In all honesty, I don't really need to sync tabs, history, or passwords. I don't even let Firefox save the passwords, I'm definitely not going to let someone sync them.

As for bookmarks, it would be nice, but with the del.icio.us extension, I find it unnecessary. If I find a site I want to remember later at home, del.icio.us takes care of it. The regular Firefox bookmarks are just handy things that let me browse to frequently visited pages more quickly. Seeing as I have a desktop, a laptop, and work desktop, the Firefox bookmarks are actually different on all three machines. Syncing them wouldn't help me a great deal. I can just do a manual export/import to save a little data entry.

I agree with not letting people sync my passwords, even if they do claim to be encrypted.

The feature I am going to miss the most is the saved open tabs. If I am reading/researching something interesting but I need to leave my pc, I don't have to bother about saving the bookmark anywhere: I just close my browser. Then next time I open a browser with Google sync installed, it gives me a list of all my pages I had open.

For some reason I never want that to happen. If I'm working in a browser, I leave it open. When I open a new browser, I always want it to be blank.
  • What I would like is the option to save a series of open tabs as a single bookmark.

If I am coding a particular project I may have one tab of the web page open, another of the WYSIWYG editor open and extra tabs open to php and/or mysql doc pages or even some CSS doc pages.

Right now I use the Home button to open three tabs at once. Is it possible to do this already via a bookmark?
  • edited June 2008
Steve, you can do that with bookmarks. Add the pages you want in a folder, and then go "bookmarks", the folder you want, then at the bottom is the option "Open all in tabs".

Now that you mention it I once did that by accident and 60 tabs opened up.

Me too! Sometimes the best way to learn is by making mistakes. Not often, but in that case I found a tool I didn't know about already.
  • You can also just middle click on the folder, and it opens each in a new tab.
  • edited June 2008
Actually, watch out for middle clicking folders. It will replace all your tabs unless you have this about:config tweak turned on:
browser.tabs.loadFolderAndReplace. Set it to false, so it won't replace your existing tabs....unless, of course, you DO want it to replace tabs...but that makes for a big pain in the ass if you accidentally middle click a folder.
For some reason I never want that to happen. If I'm working in a browser, I leave it open. When I open a new browser, I always want it to be blank.
I love having my browsers open with what I was previously browsing. So if I ever want to leave off on something, I can easily come back to it later.

As for replacing google browser sync- del.icio.us or Foxmarks, easily.

Just crash your Firefox. When you restart it will ask if you want to restore or start fresh :)
  • Is anyone else having problems with scrolling? Often times I'll scroll and it just has a bunch of the same couple lines across repeated down the page until I scroll up and down and see it again. It's weird. I'm having the problem on both of my PCs, but it may just be the ISP. Maybe?

I'm not asking for tech support, but just wondering if this was a common issue (i.e., reason to switch back to Firefox 2 for now).
  • I do remember having that issue a while back but I'm not sure where I saw it.
  • edited June 2008
Infinity- that hasn't happened to me (yet?).

  • I don't like the big back button. I always use the backspace key so the bigger button just annoys me. The trouble is everyone else seems to "looooove" it and I'm not programming savvy to make a fix myself. >.<
