Help me find a connector

edited July 2008 in Technology
If you've been paying attention you would know that I recently bought a pair of Etymotic hf2 earbuds. They are fantastic. Anyway, like many wired cellphone headsets, it uses a 3.5mm 4-contact connector. This connector functions as a normal stereo mini connector in any normal headphone jack. When plugged into a phone, it uses the extra connector to send audio from the microphone to the phone.

I just realized that the Etymotic hf2 would make perhaps the greatest gaming headset ever. I just have to find a way to split the 4-contact connector into two separate connectors, one for microphone and one for headphones. Either that, or I need a sound card on the computer that can take the 4-contact connector as input. I think the connector will be easier. If anyone can find a connector that would work, or has some other idea, let me know.

I have seen these for 2.5 mm jacks but you may be able to convert from 2.5 -> 3.5 -> Seperate jacks.
Afterthought, you could rewire a 2.5mm jack adapter into a 3.5mm if you want it all in one.

What are you talking about 2.5mm? I have a 3.5mm 4-connector. I need to split it into two separate 3.5mm, one mono microphone and one stereo headphone. 2.5mm has nothing to do with it.

Let me clarify, you can't get 3.5mm 4-pin to 2x3.5mm 3-pin jacks but you can get it from 3.5mm to 2.5mm and from there to 2x3.5mm.

So the 2.5mm is also 4-contact, and the thing that splits the 2.5mm to 2x3.5mm is actually a 4-contact splitter that separates microphone and speaker, instead of just taking one speaker and cutting it in half?
  • Yes, the headset jacks have L-Spkr, R-Spkr, Mic and Neutral which is split into a stereo and mic jack.
Instead of soldering the two together you could just duct tape the two together.

    Post a link.
  • What about this?

Yeah, but I already own the headphones. I'm not going to pay another $180 when I only need to change the connector.
  • Damn, I didn't notice the price. Best just to jury rig the connectors.
