Best 3 DS Games

edited July 2008 in Everything Else
So, I bought a DS with a kanji dictionary cartridge, since both are still $100 cheaper than a good electronic dictionary/translator. Since I actually want to use my DS to play games, what would you consider the best three DS games that are must-plays?

Comments

  • Three best DS games is hard because so many of the DS games are series. There's the Phoenix Wright series ( 4 DS ), the Advance Wars ( 2 DS, 2 GBA ), Castlevania ( 2DS, 2GBA ), Mario + Luigi( 1DS, 1GBA ), the list goes on.

The one DS game I think I played more than any other is Tetris DS, so be sure to get that. The rest depends on you.
  • Geometry Wars: Galaxies and Pokemon Pearl (Diamond) are the DS games I've played the most. If you decide you want the latter, though, wait for Pokemon Platinum to be released, since it's the same thing plus a handful of easter eggs.

That DS dictionary cartridge kicks it! Electronic Dictionaries don't have a touch screen where you can write a kanji in even if you don't know the reading! You are the one who's going for study abroad in Japan, right? You should get a copy of Kanken DS (for practicing Kanji writing.)  Also, I am addicted to "lucky star moe drill tabidachi."

Yep, that's me. I bought Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten as my dictionary. Just looked up Kanken DS, and I think I should probably buy that as well, since my kanji is lacking. Thanks!

If you could nail down the titles, though, which 1 games of these series is worth buying the most? The first for Phoenix Wright? Days of Ruin for Advance Wars? Etc.

The first Phoenix Wright is definitely the one to buy. For Advance Wars, the two games are equal but different. For Castlevania, you definitely want the first DS one. For Mario + Luigi, you want Superstar Saga for the GBA.

Tetris DS is currently out of print.
  • Pokemon D/P
    Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
    Advance Wars Days of Ruin

Those will keep you occupied for a while.

I don' t suppose you or anyone else knows any good DS programs for Chinese?
  • Isn't there something about Chinese cartridges not working with other DSs due to the size of the character set?
I use an R4 with PaDict for a Japanese dictionary but I'd really like something to get me into practicing kanji. Any sugestions?
  • I'm also thinking about getting some games to help me learn more Japanese. Are the 2 mentioned above just Japanese dictionaries or can it be for English speakers? Are there any others I should look into?
  • Final Fantasy III if you don't mind JRPGs
    Professor Layton
Puzzle quest is fun to waste ten minutes with
    Pokemon, like others have said
  • Tetris DS is currently out of print.
Pirate it, then...or look on ebay.

    Anyways....

If you wanna be a pirate:
    1. R4 / CycloDS
    2. Nothing else. Personally, I have a Cyclo...and I pirate Japanese stuff and out of print/hard to find stuff. Then I buy stuff that I really want (World Ends, FFTA2, etc).

If you want to be 100% legit (in no order):
    - World Ends with You
    - Mario Kart DS
    - Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

    Good Japanese games:
    - Rhythm Tengoku (gba, and a new DS game announced)
    - Daigasso Band Brothers (2 DS games)
    - Jump Ultimate Stars
    - Ouendan 1 + 2 (1 is infinitely better than EBA, the 2nd is alright)
    - Taiko Drum Master (2 games) (though IMO not worth the $50 on Play Asia, either pirate or wait for a sale)

Um...yeah, all those are rhythm games except Jump Ultimate stars, which is a fighter.
  • Jump Ultimate Stars
This game is absolutely amazing and I cannot recommend it enough.
  • Tetris
    Puzzle Quest
    Picross

What are your preferred genres for gaming?
  • Trauma Center: Under the Knife

Haven't played the second one yet, but the first ate my life for a good week.
  • Jump Ultimate Stars

The one hangup I have with it is that after like 12-15 hours, I pretty much did everything I wanted to. Then when I tried online matches, I always got my ass thoroughly kicked. Then again, I didn't complete every goal for each battle...but still.
  • Wait for the remake of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and can you imagine if we get a collection of all nes Megaman games on the DS, that would be awesome :D

Tetris, Clubhouse Games, and Picross are at the top of my list. Then again, I can't play my DS for too long (My neck starts hurting after about 45 minutes), so I keep things quick.

If there's one thing that's been bugging me about the DS, it's the lack of compilations. Sure, remakes like the new Space Invaders are nice, but there aren't nearly enough good classics collections!

This makes me very sad, especially because I was planing on going out and buying a copy for my girlfriend soon. I guess I'll have to start scrounging around...

Top three for me would have to be Tetris DS, Puzzle Quest, and Custom Robo Arena. Pokemon is fun, but it's eating more time then I feel like putting into it, and Mario Kart DS I find is only good/playable when you have 5-7 other people around you with DS's. I also enjoyed Star Fox Command, but that may be purely because I get giddy at the concept of a game where every button on the system is "fire".
  • Pirate it
I didn't know pirating DS games was even possible... I've seen torrents for DS games but sort of ignored them, figuring they were either fakes or so hard to implement that it isn't worth it. Didn't Nintendo put all kinds of crazy copy-protection all over that?

Lately the copy protection is built more into the coding of the games themselves than into the hardware. Nintendo can't really do much about the current round of pirating hardware because any changes they might make to the DS itself could very well keep older games from running properly. One case in point of the game itself being copy-protected would be the US version of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for the DS - if you don't have the proper firmware setup to run the bootleg then you can play for about an hour or so before it boots you out to a copy-protection screen. That being said, all it took was a firmware upgrade on most of the bootleg hardware and they were back in business. It's become stupidly easy to bootleg DS games if you're not the one dumping the ROM from the cart. All you need is the appropriate flash-cart hardware (R4DS, CycloDS, and M3 DS Real are the first three that come to mind), a memory chip to go in said hardware (a 2 GB to 8 GB MicroSD card), and a connection to the internet to get the torrents. No more need to use some kind of pass-key card in Slot One to boot the ROM from the card that's in the expansion slot. That being said, I'm firmly in the "if you like it then buy it" camp. If I download a ROM and enjoy the game then I'll actually go out and buy a copy of the game to show my support for it, even if I still keep playing the ROM dump.

To get this back on topic: I can't really pick a top 3 because my interests are so varied. I'd have to go with the Castlevania series, the DS version of Zelda, and any of the Final Fantasy games (excluding the new Crystal Chronicles)

Nope. The only game I have been having a problem with is Daigasso Band Brothers 2, since it uses an abnormally big save file, so most flashcarts don't support it.
But pirating DS games off a flash cart is the easiest thing to do...you just need to drop a .nds file on your micro SD card and it's good to go.

For anybody interested, the iPhone (at least the 3G) supports a chinese handwriting input method. Combined with a kanji dictionary like ShinKanJi I almost got what I desire. However, since the characters are chinese (they differ a little bit) there is a little problem. I also need to get myself a stylist of some sort, since writing with the finger not a very good method because it isn't very accurate and your finger gets into your field of vision. I'll ask a friend of mine who works at DPD for one of his soft pens he uses on his handheld scanner. Dried out felt pens might also do the trick if you keep them from coloring.
