Need a laptop for my mom

edited August 2008 in Technology
So my mom needs a new computer. Her desktop died, and the laptop I loaned her is in a bad way. Despite my laptop being in really bad shape (screen doesn't stay up) she really likes the laptop more than here desktop. So we're (myself, dad, and brother) are going to all chip in and get her a new laptop for her birthday that's coming up soon. We want a cheap, but good quality computer.

Requirements:
1. Core 2 cpu - solo or duo, but no celeron or AMD
2. 1GB+ of ram - she doesn't do anything more than web browsing and Word, 1GB should be enough
3. at least 14 inch screen - she wears reading glasses, an ultra small laptop with a tiny screen wouldn't suit her.
4. not to huge - She tried carrying my enormous 17 inch laptop and couldn't believe I was carrying something so heavy.

Anything else is up in the air, she doesn't need anything like an extended battery or big HD, she'll never use either.

I've been looking an Compaq's laptops and they seem to have some that'll fit these needs for about $600. What would you guys recommend.

  • Dell?
I don't know, I haven't been impressed with the quality of dells as of late.
  • No, not a Dell. I'm obviously going to go with a low-end MacBook Pro. I know it's expensive but worth it.

She is old and minimally computer literate, I can't possibly throw a different OS at her, it would be too much.

I've always liked Thinkpads, here is one on newegg that fits your specs.

I was looking at this Toshiba on Newegg, since I noticed it was a back to school deal. Really, the deal isn't much (I think it's like $50 less than the normal price), but those specs for only $550 is a great deal, IMO.

As for Dells- IMO they're really not that bad at all. They're just really overpriced.

Of course! Of course I'm chipping in for a new laptop for my far-far aunt. Sure, our family trees connect probably over several thousands of years ago, BUT THEY DO! Or was it Dkong's family tree? . . . I forgot. I do know that it wasn't Viga's family tree though.

I'm totally off whacked, did possessive third person have an apostrophe?
