Cell phone contract and early termination fees.

edited August 2008 in Everything Else
If I subscribe to a cell phone service, with a phone I already own. Will I be able to avoid being locked into a 1 to 2 year or contract or at the very least avoid early termination fees? I've been searching around the Internet and haven't found anything like this. Does some thing like that exist and carriers just don't make it easy to find out?

  • You won't be forced, generally. Just persuaded heavily, and you might pay more per month.
  • That's good to know. I've never liked the idea of being locked into a contract just to have cell phone service. I've looked into the pay as you go ones and bought a go phone through AT&T. I like it so far but I'm already micromanaging my minutes and crap like that.
  • If you own an unlocked GSM phone you can get full AT&T service month to month. It is $40/month for 450 day time minutes, and for $5 you can add 200 txt messages.
