XBLA connection issues

edited August 2008 in Technology
I am the proud owner of a nice new xbox360. Everything is working great, except, when I try to connect to XBLA.

I have a WRT54G Linksys router that I am trying to use wirelessly. This router works fine with my HTPC, TiVo and Wii. The xbox sees the router as a connection option and even has three out of four bars for connection strength. It also passes all of the XBLA connection tests. When I try to log on it just keeps going back to the screen where you can choose to log in, a nice loop of doom.

Anyone else ever had this happen? Any help would be appreciated as the 18004MYXBOX people weren't able to get this resolved.

Thanks!

EDIT: xbox360, not the old school xbox.

You're using a wireless connection for your Xbox? =__= Can't help you, having no Xbox, but good luck.

Unless you bought an Arcade skew or the router is too far away, try using the patch cable the console comes with for the connection. At least this will help to determine if it's a general problem or just a problem with the wireless capabilities. Can't really help you otherwise since I'm using the cable, but I think you might want to re-ask this question in the technical issues forum on the Microsoft XBox forums. Be warned though if you did not create an XBox live account yet. If you signup on this site with a specific username, you won't be able to use it as your gamertag. You can get it back by weird process though later on. I would recommend using a different nickname for the forums at first. When you registered for XBox Live you can use that login information later on on this site and your nickname in the forums will be your gamertag.

  • If this is the first time you've used your Xbox try hooking it up to the net using tubes and see if the updates fix anything.

Same thing happens when I try to log on via the tube method, what the heck. I wonder if I might have an issue with a defective xbox360.

Wireshark shows "MS NLB MS NLB heartbeat" so it appears to be idling okay, just gets back into the login loop of doom.

  • The router is a newer one and the version of the firmware isn't listed as one that is supported, should this matter? I would think the later firmware versions would work, or not.

Disconnect the router entirely and patch the XBox strainght into the intertubes. It could be that your XBox is treating your router like a big truck.

Seriously though, try a straight through connection.

I tried this and no luck. It turned out that my wireless reciever was acting as a NAT and so was the Linksys (if that makes any sense). Once I had a static IP all was right with the world. Not sure why the xbla test said that the NAT was open and how it worked enough to send gamer info, as well as work with my Wii, Tivo and HTPC. But at least the story has a happy ending.

. . . the rest of the weekend I will be muttering "double nat . . . grrrrr"
  • Ohh, double NAT! Just the one is enough of a bitch as it is.

Do you have uPnP turned on perhaps?
