Jobs in College

edited September 2008 in Everything Else
Alright guys, I was just thinking about my current job and whatnot...I was thinking about college, and jobs while at college.

What did you guys do? Summer jobs? Jobs while at college? What place did you work at?

Hopefully this could give me good ideas for when I get into college.

  • I'm tutoring at the university I go to.
  • Why work for someone? Why pick a skill you are good at and make a business around it on campus?
  • I was a compliance checker in high school and for a bit in college. I also worked in a campus store for a semester, but it wasn't so great. After my first year I only worked in the summer and that was for internships related to my major.

Wow everyone else had/has a great job. I myself am still at University and work at my local KFC, and I have to say that it doesn't feel like work, because everyone there is a great person, plus $13.00 and hour helps.

13 an hour for working at KFC?! I am glad they pay a decent hourly wage (if you don't have kids).
  • I worked in the major dining hall on Campus, Gracie's. Those were some pretty fun times. The job sucked, but the people were great.
  • I worked food service for freshman year. Every other year I worked in student services and scheduling offices. Desk and lab jobs are where it's at.

Wait, what the fuck? Are you the store manager or something? Sounds like YOU had the great college job, if you ask me.

I'm actually toying with the idea of a small PC repair business in college, especially if I can get one or two of my friends in on it, too. Other than that I have no ideas or plans for starting my own business around campus.

Dell started out as a custom PC building business in college.
  • I did work study in my Bio Department's wet labs (animal care) and as T.A. for some of the lower level bio classes. Then I got a research grant from the Vermont Genetics Network to do research into plant flowering hormones.
  • I've been working at UPS for the past two years. They gave me health insurance and tuition reimbursement. The fact that our building is fairly busy and time and a half starts at five hours each night doesn't hurt either.
  • The last year and a half of college I was the lab instructor for the networking lab. Before that I coordinated a group of students that did their social service taking underpriviledge kids to museums and amusement parks. I loved that, kids are so much fun, plus the perks of visiting all those places.

That's what I'm gonna do as well. Maybe we could start a chain of campus PC repair shops. hehe

I already run a small computer repair business around my town called QwikClik. It's just something to make a bit of extra money, and with a small town, I can't expect much business.

$13.00 an hour is trainee wage, it might help to mention that I live in Australia.

  • Er.. I work in a comic/used book store right now and I might get a job at the college book store or fitness center.. and possibly a third at a convenience store. It's very possible considering I work like, 5-8 hours at the book store, and I'd work at the college during times that I'm stuck there anyway and the convenience store is during weekends. =3 I think that's pretty awesome. A little bit of everything.

Speaking of this, my college had 2 services that have exploded into huge businesses. One of them was made by a student who did their friends laundry for a price. They now have a northeastern wide business called Husky Express that does hundreds of loads of laundry for students daily. They charge quite a lot, but people sure do hate to do their laundry.

Another is a service that goes to any store or non delivery place in a certain distance o the college and buys stuff for you. On rainy days when you want some food that isn't fast food, you can call them up at any time of the day or night.

So if you can think of some cool service for people, go for it. You will learn a lot, and maybe strike it rich. Pluss owning your own company would be crazy good to put on a resume, I would assume.

  • During my senior year in high school, I worked at a movie theater. Even though I was only getting paid minimum wage, I still enjoyed it. Late night theater screenings, free movies, and meeting cool people made the job worth it for about a year.

During my first year in college, I also worked for a local video rental store. That was probably the easiest and most fun job I've ever had. The only thing that made it kinda bad was the fact that this video store also rented out porn. There are some really bad and really funny experiences when either dealing with customers about the porn section.

One of the good things about working for these places is if you have morning classes, you can then go to work for the evening/night shifts.
  • I'm a first-year college person, and I'm working in a biology lab which most people interpret to be lab bitch work, but which I honestly don't mind too much. I basically make solutions and grow teh bacteriums, and it's actually good experience in my opinion.

I was going to work for the office of information/technology, but the only positions they had open were desk jobs to help people log on to computers and stuff, which I thought to be a bit boring.
