Google Summer of Code

edited September 2008 in Technology
Has anyone ever participated in the Google Summer of Code? If so, how was it?

Comments

  • I would, if I didn't have a job.
  • I'm considering trying it on over the summer. I'm sure it'd be good for my resume and I'd learn a lot from the experience.

Go for it. See if they will let you work on la.coni.ca.

Do you think it's possible for a n00b coder to do anything decent in a summer?

If you really work hard on it with your full effort, then yes you can do something easily. Remember, the dwarf fortress guy is a n00b coder. A lot of today's programming languages and frameworks make it very easy to get a lot done with relatively little code.

That's cool, I'll probably do it for some work experience. It'd be awesome if I could work on Battle for Wesnoth.

    That would be awesome.
  • What exactly is this Google Summer of Code business? It sounds very interesting indeed.

If you are a student in a college or university, you submit a proposal explaining how you'll tackle the task of writing X for open source company Y. If your proposal is accepted, you get $500 and another $2000 if you are on track by midterm and another $2000 if you complete the task by the final date. So it's a potential $4500 and the company gets $500. It progresses FOSS, promotes computer programming and exposes students to the "working" world.

I would have loved to, if my school didn't think that:
~ Doing multi-million dollar renovation on a 40 year old school.
~ Having one of the largest field house in the state that doesn't have AC that works 100% of the time, broken ceiling fans, a floor that is already having sink spots, and lights that work if the planets are aligned.
~ Having a fucking huge library that is only a third full of books with 3 state-o-the art conference rooms that are never used for students and only district meetings.
~ A theater large enough to hold around 750 people that is used every once in a blue moon, I'm talking movie theater big and the my anime club can't even us it.
Is more important than my education thus they cut almost ever elective, which includes computer science. Thank god, my web design class wasn't cut.

    Save us, Mr. Period!

Before my eyes started bleeding, I think I gleaned that Morio's assuming that the Summer of Code is a school project, and that you need the blessing of the school board. Not so. You just need to have an interest in programming, some time in which to work, and the ability to form a coherent sentence. You deal with Google and the open source project maintainers directly, with no middleman.

This is mean, but I don't know how Mario remembers to breathe.

I think its justified, considering that Morio was on probation for poor grammar and spelling at least once already. While I appreciate that he really started proofreading while he was on probation, ever since that pretty red bar came off his posts I've been noticing they're starting to slip again.
  • I think it's crap that I can't go on a rant while half asleep, and not get any responses that has something to do with my comment. I'm Hard-of-Hearing, and my grammar and spelling sucks because of it, and it pisses me off when you guys make fun of my grammar and spelling, rather than responding to the comment.

We all have problems, my leg is slightly itchy, but you don't see me complaining.

Right, because hearing has anything to do with grammar and spelling. If it pisses you off, use proper grammar and spell words correctly.
  • Huh, doesn't seem to be a problem for all the deaf kids I know in AP English. Also, you'd be surprised how many forumers know English as a second language and still have better spelling and grammar than you.

I hear almost no English besides the podcasts I listen to. English is my second languange. I've not finished Middle School yet, and I can with some certainty say I could type that rant with better grammar than you even after staying awake 36 hours(that said, sleep deprivation doesn't affect me all that much). All it takes is a few extra glances at the text.

I'm an insomniac. I've frequented the forums while transitioning medications before (which usually results in two full days of consciousness), and I've never had a complaint about illegible posts.

  • I'm just sad that this topic has been derailed by the usage of poor grammar and spelling. It just shows the necessity of proper literacy in civilized, intellectual discussion.

I can understand that you get mad when people correct your capitalization. However, I literally couldn't tell what you meant to say in that message. I have no idea what you are talking about. Next time, read over your post to make sure it is sensible. Also, use Firefox for spell-check.

edit: I'm sick of every thread being derailed by someone who so grammar Nazi. Not every post is going to be and has to be perfect. I just made some post while I was half-asleep right before bed and now I'm on probation.

OK, I swear I meant to drop it after ripping in to your flank on that last post, but I just can't sit back and shrug off more bad grammar in a post where you're trying to defend your use of the English language.

You're correct; not every post has to be perfect. However, that doesn't mean that they can all be train wrecks either. We've all made mistakes, and most of us have had the red pen touch at least one of our posts. The reason you're back on probation isn't because of one typo, or one poorly formed sentence. it's because you consistently make multiple typos per post, and it requires undue mental processing to decipher what message you are trying to convey.

They pretty much have to be on average, or else you'll keep that banner. ;^)

Grammar is a fairly strict requirement around here.
