Civilization IV Colonization

edited October 2008 in Video Games
So, has anyone picked it up yet? If so, what are your thoughts on the game?

  • I thought it was kinda boring (and I am a huge fan of Civ 4). I haven't played the original, but Colonization isn't worth it if you've already got Civ 4, in my opinion.
  • This is a game for fans of the original, or casual strategy fan. It is not meant to be as deep and complex as Civ 4. I think it was a huge mistake labeling it as Civ 4: Colonization, because most people are going to go in expecting Civ 4 and not get anything close to it.

If you've played the original game, its basically a complete visual upgrade of that game, with a few changes. Those changes are pretty much that there are now cultural boundaries (and everything that comes with those,) Native cities are now like civilization cities in Civ 4, there is a new navel unit between Frigate and Man-o-War, using Privateers to attack another countries' ships actually works without them knowing its you, and the Founding Fathers system doesn't work the same. Now everyone pulls from a pool of Founding Fathers as opposed to them just being like tech that you acquired over th game. So its more of a race now for them in some cases.

Not to pick on you, but can you reconcile these statements? It seems kinda strange to me.

Civ 4: Colonization has no relation to Civ 4 aside from that it uses the Civ 4 engine. Civ 4: Colonization is a remake of the 1994 Sid Meier game, Colonization.

Oh. Thanks. I must admit, Sid Meier is not really on my radar in terms of game devs.
  • He should be. Sid Meier = the Civilization series, Railroad Tycoon, Pirates!, Alpha Centauri, and the most feared game of all time Sid Meier's SimGolf.
  • I'm aware of what he's done, I just don't really follow him. His games aren't my bag.
