Computer sounded like a jet engine in the morning; XP wont work anymore.

edited October 2008 in Everything Else
This morning I woke up and took a shower, and decided to check my email. My computer had a whirring noise near the hard drive or disc drive fan. It sounded like the fan was hitting something that was stuck in place. I finished in about 10 minutes and turned it off to go to school. When I came home, I turned it on and the Windows XP Home load screen got to the second go-around of the blue bar and flashed a blue screen for a few milliseconds, resized very quickly in some manner, and then went back to my BIOS screen. No start configuration will work (Safe mode, etc.). Ubuntu works fine.

Any idea what happened or is wrong?

  • Ubuntu and Windows XP are on the same hard drive? It might be just bad sectors, but more importantly, what the hell were you thinking not instantly shutting the computer down when it made that noise?
  • It was like 6:25. I clearly wasn't thinking straight. And yes, Ubuntu and XP are on the same hard drive. Any advice on what to do?
  • Run something like the windows disk checker (you'll have to look up how to invoke it).

Ouch, that sucks. Omnutia just gave pretty much the same advice I can give. You'll have to check the drive. If it still won't work after that you'll probably have to reinstall Windows. Mount the XP partition in Ubuntu and backup your important stuff before you do though. Then reinstall XP and use the Ubuntu Live CD to fix Grub. Just hope you don't get the same problems as I got when my entire Linux hard drive partition table was destroyed. On hindsight I think it would've been easier to walk into hell, kick Lucifer in the crotch and walk back out than all the time consuming crap I had to go through to fix that damned partition table. =_=
  • If the heads have skidded on the surface then you may get files that stick and won't copy. Just copy what you can.
I really need to look into upgrading my server to do backups.
  • It's ok, I've only used Ubuntu twice, nothing on here I need. And with XP, the only things I need are my games, which are on Steam or disc. I'll probably just reinstall XP if it doesn't fix itself or require very little effort to be fixed.

Run your Windows XP CD and get to the XP partition manager thing. Go into the recovery console, and run a chkdsk on it. If anything is wrong with the sectors, this will fix it, or at least tell you. If that still doesn't help, try running fixboot, and then fixmbr. These may mess up Grub though, so only do these last.

Normally, if Windows won't boot, I run those three commands and everything is peachy clean.

Edit: You will likely have to tack on something at the end of chkdsk to make it run, which I believe is "chkdsk /p". Not %100 on that though.

Jet engine? Well let me tell you about loud computers. I have a 1989 Mac Plus with a 20 MB external and starting that thing is like a Jumbo Jet taking off, and is made louder by the external fan/power supply that I got for it. But I find the sound to be pleasant and soothing, the feeling that everything with your Mac will be alright.

The Mac Plus is no where near as bad as some of the original Macs (1985).

The Mac 512k makes a loud poping sound when the monitor finally dies, by the way.

    That's the steam engine combusting.
