Tips for guys with long hair?

  • If you are going to get your hair cut, make sure it is over 10 inches long so you can donate it to Locks of Love.
    Fuck Locks of Love.
What the hell, HJ? What is your problem with locks of love? You can't just make a statement like that and not explain it.
I think if people go bald for any reason at any age they should just stay bald. If they don't like it, they can wear a hat. People should wear more hats anyway, goddammit.

I would probably just use technology and science to acquire additional hair.

What about cancer patients? Do you know what it is like to be sickly and frail and have the added insult of baldness? People look at you and know your are ill instantly. Having them gawk and stare or treat you differently because they can instantly identify that they are ill takes a huge psychological toll. When I went through chemo the first time I had to wear scarves because my hair was so patchy. Thankfully it didn't all fall out, so I could pass it off as a gypsy or big headband look. Had I lost any more, I was definitely going to get a wig. A lot of people (men, women, and children) see those wigs as comfort in a stressful time - it gives a little bit of dignity, control, and continuity. Even with hats and scarves, it is still obvious when someone is completely bald. Baldness for any reason other than choice for women can really change how they are perceived and treated by the public at large. It stinks, but it is reality.
  • Do not go to a barber, go to a stylist when you get your hair cut. It will cost more, but barbers do not know what to do with long hair.

I was just trying to be silly. I apologize. Please don't take offense.

  • You failed at silliness this time. Locks of Love makes it so little girls with leukemia can feel better about the way they look after chemo screws their bodies up. Think before you say something like that.
  • While locks of love is awesome and all, the sad part is that we shouldn't need locks of love. Baldness should be a badge of honor and awesomeness, not something to hide.

You hear that everyone? Gomidog, get the razer.

I'm growing my afro as far as I can before I, like my dad and grandad, go bald. I'm mostly worried about having the dent at the back of my head visible (it's pretty big).

  • Most important advice it is possible to give someone wanting to grow their hair long:
Do not listen to people who tell you to cut it off.
Quoted for truth - this man knows his long haired business.

    Yes ma'am. Sorry, ma'am.

However, as Mr. Shark observed, I can't control my actions because I don't have free will. So don't be cross with me. Be cross with the universe.

I've always been a fan of the lazier "Shoot the messenger" option.
  • If you are in high school then get used to people asking to style your hair. Man, If I had a quarter for every time a girl asked me if they could braid my hair, or for every time a guy said something like, "Dude, you should totally have dread-locks." Also, you may get a nickname. Some people still call me Jesus (which is the definition of irony since I am one of the only aethist/agnostic/heathens at my high school).
Sometime sou might end up getting awkward compliments. One time I was just walking along and some woman told me I had beautiful hair which was kind of weird.

Definitely get it trimmed every few months or so because it can really help you from looking homeless. I've got a good 8 inches under my shoulders so I will probably get about 4 inches lopped off. One of the most important things you need to do is comb/brush your hair the right way. You can't just go from the top of your head to the end of your hair or you will tear your hair out. Start a couple of inches from the end of your hair and brush down. Keep doing this but go higher each time. It may take longer but it will help keep you from tearing your hair out. I know to some of you it may seem weird to explain how to brush hair, but if someone doesn't know how then they need to know.

    IMPORTANT
  • Thanks for all the advice! I'm sure other people can use this, too.
  • I just donated 12 inches to Locks of Love last December. I've kept it relatively short since then, but I always have an urge to grow it all back. Long hair is the awesomes, but so is donating hair to the needy.
  • Don't. ever. let. it. get. matted.
I used to have a ponytail in my "I-don't-care" days that I let get matted. Half an hour of hair-pulling later....

Well, the universe doesn't control its actions either, so you can't really be cross at anything.

My ponytail was 14" when fully stretched out (curly/wavy hair made it 10" relaxed), so that went off to LoL when I cut it off. I do wish that it wasn't a needed thing, though.
  • Unless it starts thinning. The key with long hair is knowing when it's time to let it go.
    Sadly, this is true.
