Traded in PSP for DS

edited July 2006 in Everything Else
Yesterday, I traded in my PSP with all it's games for the DS Lite and 5 games: Mario Kart, New Super Mario Brothers, Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime Pinball, and Age of Empires. The whole ordeal was definitely worth it. I'll be taking back everything good I said about the PSP. I've never been a big fan of Sony anyway. I hated the PS1 and PS2, and I'm bound to hate the PS3 when it comes out, which is probably going to be delayed past November. And I love Mario Kart, can't stop playing it with my sister on her DS and on the internet. So much better than the loading times, and the sheer crappiness of the games I used to play.

After I had gotten to gamestop and traded in the PSP and all the games, including some shitty Xbox and PS2 titles, I had $270 to spend. It was crazy. I spent it all and I got all the games you guys had recommended in the forums. So what can I say? Thanks Rym and Scott for proving me wrong. The PSP sux ass and I fully admit it. I'm going to change my avatar now, if you haven't noticed what it is already.

  • Just in case anyone needed more proof that we're always right.
  • Hey, let me know how Age of Empires is. I've seen it around, but I never got to actually picking it up.
  • I'm glad you're enjoying your purchase, glimp, but the change seems very dramatic. I think a review of the two systems as someone who has seen both sides of the fence might be cool.
  • Yeah. Some audio or an email about this would be fantastic fodder for Geekback ^_~

  • Here's what I'm going to do. I'll send in some audio feedback, basically reviewing both handhelds and proving that DS Lite is better. I mean, it won't be that hard, considering that I've owned a PSP for more than a year and a DS Lite for a few days.

As for what will be in the review, there will be the side by side comparison of the PSP and DS Lite, and the rating of 5 games which I mentioned in the first post.

Oops! The avatar still needs changing. I'll be workin' on that.
  • Age of Empires is good. I've only played single player but I like it, I've done a couple of the campaigns, its pretty good, the AI is kind of dumb (like it will have a chance to kill your hero but it will attack one of your lower level guys instead, or will run away instead of attacking), I don't mind that because I've usually given the chance to kill my guy by screwing up.

The only problem I've had is that sometimes it hangs, usually when you're just about to win, and I've usually not saved in a while so I get very frustrated.
  • Oh I should say about the AI that I've been playing the easy setting so that may have something to do with it. One of the good things is you have 3 possible opponents with different ways of playing and you can set each of them to a different difficulty. So say you've gotten good at beating AI player 1 you can up the difficulty on him and leave the others on easy or medium.

I thought about a trade-in myself, but after spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on the PSP and now being able to download video and audio podcasts makes it worth keeping. There are at least four games that I want to buy before I'm through: Legend of Heroes II, Race Driver 2006, Ridge Racers 2 and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. After that it's iPod Video (black) for me - the gadget that I sorta kinda wanted in the first place.

This Saturday though I DO plan to take $240.00 and go on a DS Lite shopping spree at the nearest Best Buy. So far I plan to purchase NSMB, Tetris DS and Advance Wars DS along with the system.

EDIT: Darn the family! Because my mother was docked a full day's pay I had to help her pay the rent, and because my sister & brother-in-law didn't work that week I had to pay for the groceries. I can't buy my DS Lite until the 24th now. The family was (rightfully) upset that they sabotaged my quest for NSMB and AW: DS, especially since I haven't been able to buy a new video game in about six months. Hopefully the FRC won't have the DS tournaments up until then.

  • You know, trading in my PSP might not be a bad idea. I'm really thinking about getting a 360 this week. I'm about half way to what I need money wise without dipping into my bank account. Trading in my PSP and games might put me past the turning point I set for myself. I just gotta find all my damn PSP cases.

How much did you get for the PSP?
  • Gamestop gave me 100 for mine, plus another 20 from a coupon, which is not a bad deal. I bought mine for 200 and I've had it for more than a year. Also, Sony is lamenting about dropping the price of the PSP (Playstation Pornable) to around 180 bucks.
  • Fuck the psp.
  • Rym and Scott convinced me to get my PSP instead of a DS. I am so glad I have it. It's nearly my favourite toy. In fact, since my 60GB iPod video was stolen, its second only to my PC. I don't care what anybody says, I would probably never buy a DS. I don't like any of the games I've seen or played, while I have enjoyed a majority of the PSP games I have played.
Now I can use it to stream audio directly from my PC (I didn't have to before, because of the iPod).
Another thing; of all of my friends with handhelds, 1 has a DS, while 7 have PSPs. The guy with the DS is also a prick who I wouldn't play games with anyway.

How exactly did Rym and Scott convince you to get a PSP. Unless you did it out of an effort to prove them wrong. If that's the case, that's the weirdest reason I've ever heard of buying a console.
  • I used to use my PSP a lot, but then I got a video iPod which does everything I was doing on the PSP except play games. But that was back at school when I just needed something to play music while I walked to class. Now my iPod sits in my car, and my PSP sits collecting dust on top of my old DS

They were talking about it, and talking about some of its bad features (UMD movies and stuff, none of which I use), and talking about it, and why the DS was better, so I started looking into that myself, and found that the PSP was better for me.
One of their bigger arguments at the time was the load time. Back then, I wasn't really bothered by load times at all. Newer games don't have a load time.

I did a comparison of the games I would want on both systems. The DS had maybe two (One being Final fantasy), while the PSP had something like six. I have to admit though, I'm disappointed by the lack of turn based RPGs on the PSP.
  • Fuck the PSP. The only good thing you can use it for is porn and that is it.

There are less than five more games that I want to play, but I do agree with you that the PSP is now only good for listening to podcasts or being used as a $200.00 paperweight.

PSP: it's like trash, that you can take outside.

You don't take your trash outside? Ewwww. Also, remember to click the HTML radio button.
  • I actually did the same thing earlier this year after getting my tax refund check. I got the DS and Animal Crossing bundle, some screen protector sheets, a carrying case, Trauma Center: Under the Knife, and Warioware Touched. All very good, and I have more fun with these three games than I ever did with the six I used to own for the PSP.
  • I've got my GBA and I'm wondering if the time is right to buy a DS.

My daughter has one and I occasionaly use hers...

We play the Pokemon games (90% of the time) and trade/battle with each other.

What games are out there for the DS that would make me want to get my own? Any good RPG games or turn-based strategy games? I hate the "real time strategy" games as I feel they often go in favor of the faster player and not the better strategist.

Advance Wars is the turn based strategy. Also, there are new Pokemon DS games coming out.
  • Tetris is also a great game to get. Like Scrym said, its the staple of the series.
