Fallout 3

edited October 2008 in Video Games
Anyone playing?

I'm a huge, huge fan of the Fallout series, and I've been waiting for this game for years, in one form or another. I bought it on Steam as soon as it came out yesterday, but I've only had a couple of hours to play it so far. I've been steeling myself for a soul-crushing disappointment, but so far (and, like I said, only a couple of hours...) I'm liking what I'm seeing. It feels right.

  • I CANNOT WAIT. Saturday. I'm getting it Saturday.

    10 years, I have waited! 10 years!
  • I haven't gotten very far in, yet, and despite not playing any of the other Fallout games, I'm really enjoying it. I just got out of the vault. The view of the city ruins was amazing, I wasn't expecting that after stepping out. I really liked how they did the character setup and how they spread it out and integrated it into the beginning.
  • The game is super awesome. If you are running low on ammo in the beginning, try doing a story mission or two.
  • 1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes, 12 seconds...
  • I really really am enjoying the game (especially the tutorial). I also felt nostalgia for the fact I got out of the vault and immediately went the wrong way and was killed by some dude with a flame thrower. It wouldn't be fallout without having to reload within the first few minutes.
  • Is this game more FPS or RPG? I can't tell from the press coverage.

A little bit of both. You have the ability to "pause" time and use action points to target enemies. When you run out of action points you can run around FPS-style until your APs regenerate.

I love this game. The way they establish backstory is pure genius.

    Go now!

Eff yeah, it's apocalypse porn! Also, the design of Megaton is amazing. The game looks SO good. Not just on graphics technology, but what they've done with it.

That's what's supposed to happen?! No wonder I hated the originals. Every time I've ever played them I just walked out and died almost immediately, or got lost with nowhere to go. The fpsing of the new one gave me some hope I might have an easier go of it, but you've just dashed that.

Scott does this mean you won't be playing FO3?

    Not anytime soon.

Wahambulance. It wasn't exactly the games fault I didn't check the map that clearly listed the town I had to go for and instead walked into the war zone that was Bethesda. It's a open world game that allows you to walk to the end of it right away if you want and with that if you decide to be stupid you'll get killed. I like to explore and go places I shouldn't in open world games, and it generally gets you killed (or the thought that that sniper was just shooting warning shots at me ^_^). Though since then I've only died because I charged a raider who was using a shotgun with a bat... It's nowhere near as hard as the original game, and I haven't encountered a bad guy that I couldn't take out (yet).

  • Here's the big question: Xbox or PC version? Any big differences that make one version better than the other?

On paper the idea of an open world game is cool. In reality, it is lame. By giving me infinite options without clear direction, I lose all motivation as a player to even bother to do anything. Whenever I try to do something and explore, I'm left with very few options. When I repeatedly die at the drop of a hat, forced to start over, that is incredibly discouraging.

There is something that most "good" single player video games have in common. They give the player a big goal like saving the princess. However, they also give the player medium and short term goals like getting one piece of the triforce, or beating the boss.

I like the style of Fallout, and I like the idea of it. But as a game, I was never able to get into it. When I actually play I have no motivation, and quickly get lost and/or die. Even when I was able to find something I wanted to do, there were few options for me. People in towns wouldn't talk to me. Even if they did, no dialogue choices were helpful. Any items I had or was able to acquire were completely useless. I did feel like there were lots of places to explore, but it also felt like every place I go is a mine field. When surrounded by mines, it doesn't take long to decide to just not do anything.

I had similar problems playing games like Baldur's Gate. It was cool how you could do almost anything you wanted to, and it somewhat realistically modeled a real D+D world. But I really had no direction or motivation. When I found some, I died immediately. This kind of game might be good for some people out there, but not for me.
  • Maybe you should try it out or watch Rym play it. It's not as bad as your making it out to be or even as bad as the old fallout games are in that respect.

That might be easier if they had a demo.
  • I'm sure they'll have one in a few weeks. Alot of games these days make a demo after the game is released oddly.

There will be no Fallout 3 demo.

If a game is too closed it is labeled "boxed canyon" too open and gamers lack direction.

What is a game that is open enough and not a boxed canyon?

EDIT: Would it sway you if you could make a sweet Hokuto no Ken-style pink mohawk?

    The Legend of Zelda.
  • The Legend of Zelda.
The NES one? That was a great game or, the Wii version?

There is only one game with that name.

Thought you might have been referring to the series. I remember you talking about the Twilight Princess version so that was why I asked about that one.
  • Gametap has Fallout 1 for free. It is worth trying out to see where the series came from.
  • This game looks good, and if I hadn't abandoned PC gaming in favor of other pursuits I'd probably get it.

    Might check this out though.

If you liked the Baldur's Gate series / style you might like it and free is my favorite price.
  • I don't get the criticism that Fallout was too open. I never had any problems knowing exactly where to go and what to do. If you just pay attention to what the people say, and look at the map, it's pretty obvious.

Just played a couple more hours of FO3. Still awesome. The "getting jumped by raiders while crossing open wasteland" is so much better than in the originals -- it feels really cinematic.
  • I played Baldur's Gate (not sure which game) for quite a while. It came on 8 CDs or something. If Fallout 1 is similar I'd certainly give it a go. That is, if I still used a PC. I'll google how easy it is to get working on a Macbook, but if anyone has any experience along these lines, I'd appreciate suggestions.
  • I've been loving Fallout 3. I played it for way too long on Tuesday. I was planning to play kind of a neutral character, but I found myself really feeling bad for all the people in the wastes, so I've sort of ended up playing a good guy out of sympathy.
  • I think I'll be trading in some old Wii games So I can buy it for only $20 on the Xbox. Odds are that I will never play Metroid Prime 3 or Twilight Princess again.
