Quantum of Solace

edited November 2008 in Everything Else
I'm probably going to the premier tonight at CityWalk in Hollywood. Anyone else going to see the movie tonight?

  • I was, until I started reading the reviews...
  • I've seen every James Bond movie in theaters since I was deemed old enough by my parents. I'm excited.
  • I just got out of the theater. It was an okay movie, but not quite "Bond".

Was it better than the later Brosnan films?

    In short: No.
    In Long:
In my opinion, no, it wasn't. David Craig does, indeed, bring with him a new Bond, but this new Bond is by no means as refined as our Brosnan Bond. Taking off where Casino Royale left off, Bond is angry about the loss of his former love...Very angry. He has no time for wit or cool, just anger. Any attempted wit comes off dry and not funny. It seems the entire movie is focusing on his need for vengeance with his mission being a secondary objective. As an action movie, its fine, perhaps better than average. But as a Bond movie, its sub par.

The only saving grace for this new turn in the story is that, because it is portraying a less seasoned Bond, He has yet to refine himself the level at which we know him with the Brosnan films. In addition, this is clearly part two in a three part series. Throughout the movie, the word "Quantum" was used maybe twice and at the end we see Bond finding out what it is, but it was learned off camera. The audience still has no idea. The next part will tie everything together and, perhaps, be the refining moment for our straying Bond.

  • It was good, but it wasn't on the edge of your seat good.

Hell yeah! The later Brosnan films were almost a farce. Cybernetically controlled orbital lasers cutting through B52 bombers while epic sword fighting goes on inside? Puh-leez.

I guess the correct answer to your question depends on whether you like the sci-fi action Bond, a la Moonraker or Die Another Day, or the more subtle spy Bond like Dr No or From Russia with Love. For me there are no truly horrible Bond films with the exception of George Lazenby, but things like spending 50% of the effects budget in the last 15 minutes can put a serious damper on an otherwise excellent Bond (e.g., the aforementioned last Brosnan).

If you have read the novels by Fleming, you'll appreciate the new Craig Bonds. The major fault with the second film is that it is more of a "Casino Royale - part B" than a stand alone film.

  • I also saw it last night with a bunch of people. We actually dressed up, but since this mostly involved black suits and slinky dresses I'm not sure how many people noticed.

I thought it was a credible Bond film, but not outstanding.
  • I thought it was lots of fun, but more than 2/3rds of it felt like filler. The plot was thin, which is okay for 007 film, but the villain was amazingly weak. I am hoping that they make a third that goes into what was setup in this one, cause that seems like it'll be interesting.
  • I just got back from seeing the movie and I would have to say that it is just a transitional film. That being said, I enjoyed it a lot and I can't wait for the third part of this storyline.
  • My favorite part of the movie was when M is in that guys apartment.
"When they say 'We have people everywhere' it's supposed to be demonstrative. You don't expect one of them to actually be standing in the room!"
  • I saw this last night, and I really, really liked it. There was too much shaking and cutting at the beginning, but it got a lot better. I am really liking the new Craig bond series, and I can't wait for the next one.
  • I really enjoyed that scene at the opera (starting from when he starts listening in and ending when the guy ends up on the car)... for me, that was really breathtaking.

The feel I got from this movie was less that of the traditional Bond, and more that of the Bourne movies. There is an evil entity, but you don't exactly know what it is or why it exists, and the protagonist is pursued by henchmen whom he evades through gritty hand-to-hand combat and parkour/vehicular chase scenes.
  • I finally got around to seeing this today (Britain actually got a film before you guys for a change) and after Mark Kermode's underwhelming review I wasn't expecting much. However it was rather good, a solid 7/10.
Craig is shaping up to be the best Bond ever and he is certainly the best Bond since Connery, I love the new Bourne like style of Bond, he is a hero that bleeds.
The song by Jack White sucks though.

    Minor Spoiler
It's always good to see the American's been the arrogant and short sighted bad guys for a change
    End Spoiler
  • This is why you shouldn't read reviews before watching a movie. For games I can understand, as it is a considerably more expensive purchase, but you're really ruining the experience if you have an impression of the quality before you enter the theater. It's Bond. Even for this rather different style of Bond, you pretty much know what to expect from it. Do yourself a favor and experience the movie for yourself, not for Mark Kermode.
