A little help with panel creation please.

edited November 2008 in Conventions
I've been working on a panel for my local con. I'm planning on it being a beginners guide to anime, giving suggestions to new anime fans on shows/movies to watch from various genres. I've hit a roadblock in that I can't think of more shows/movies to put on my list, I know I've seen something from each genre but it's not coming to mind at the moment.

action
Air Master
Birdy the Mighty (OVA and Decode)

thriller
Serial Experiments Lain
Perfect Blue

horror
Ghost Hunt
Blood: The Last Vampire

drama

romance
5 Centimeters Per Second
Romeo and Juliet

sci-fi
Innocent Venus

comedy

fantasy
Slayers
Record of Lodoss War

robot
The Big O
Pat Labor

super robot
King of Braves: GaoGaiGar
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team

fanservice
Rosario+Vampire

slice of life

The Catch All
Cowboy Bebop

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Might I sugggest going a bit old school with a few picks, I mean there are plenty of older and better super robot shows out there :-p

And you have one sci-fi show on there and it's a pretty new one and you can't think of other shows that would be good for beginnners?

(I'm running a Anime you should see Panel at the Video game expo in Philly on Saturday).

  • I want to have two, maybe three, shows for each genre since it will allow me to have enough time to talk about each show equally.

Like I already said, my mind is blank on anything else to recommenced; it's why I started this thread in the first place, to jog my memory and to get the opinions of people who I respect.

Missing a sports category, add Hajime no Ippo to that

    GTO

    Action:
Lupin III (the Ghibli one at least)
    Read or Die TV

    Slice of life/comedy
    GTO
    Azumanga Daioh
    Welcome to the NHK
    Moyashimon
    Gokusen

    Thriller
    Paranoia Agent

  • I'd say instead of Romeo and Juliet The Girl who leapt through time.

    thriller
    Serial Experiments Lain
This series is way too slow for a beginners show. The lack of clear plot will also intimidate those who just want to watch "coo" adult animation.
I suggest replacing it with Boogiepop Phantom - it has a similar menacing urban surrounding along with a complex narrative, but there's a lot more action and drama to keep you interested.

  • Thanks for the help, here is a reworked list. Anything else you all think I should add or get rid of?

    action
    Black Lagoon
Birdy the Mighty (OVA and DeCode)

    thriller
    Boogiepop Phantom
    Perfect Blue

    horror
    Ghost Hunt
    Monster

    drama
    Ef: A Tale of Memories
    Millennium Actress

    romance
    5 Centimeters Per Second
The Girl Who Lept Through Time

    sci-fi
    Innocent Venus
    Ghost in the Shell

    comedy
    Kanakon
    Full Metal Panic: Fumofu

    fantasy
    Slayers
    Record of Lodoss War

    robot
    Robotech/Macross
    Pat Labor

    super robot
    The Big O
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

    gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team

    fanservice
    Sekirei
    Rosario+Vampire
    To Love-Ru

    slice of life
    Azumanga Daioh
    Your'e Under Arrest

    Hajime no Ippo
    Eyeshield 21

    The Catch All
    Cowboy Bebop
  • Irresponsible Captain Tyler
    escaflowne
    Laputa
    Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
    Nadesico
Maho Tsuki Tai (Magic User's Club
    Macross Plus
    Read or Die
    Grave of the firefly
    Utena
  • Comedy: English dub of Ghost Stories
  • A lot of people these days get into anime by watching Naruto or Bleach. Even if you don't want to recommend either, I think you should at least mention them.
  • Kanokon? KANOKON??! Put that under fanservice if you are going to have that in there at all. What about Lucky Star or Azumanga instead.

I don't think that Gundam needs to be a separate category. Put it in Robot, because before Gundam it was all super robots and stuff.

You under arrest is not really slice of life. It's more "Action Comedy Police Show" You don't usually put cop shows in "slice of life."

Eyeshield 21 is more a comedy than a straight up sports show. For a more realistic sports show that came out recently, I recommend the baseball series Oofuri, or the older series Touch.

Many of these shows are in multiple categories. Tokikake (The girl who leapt through time) is High School, Slice of Life, Sci Fi, Romance, Drama with comedic elements. It's tough to categorize these by genre.

Here are my suggestions, based off what you seem to be going for.

    action
    Black Lagoon
Birdy the Mighty (OVA and DeCode)
    Read or Die

    thriller
    Perfect Blue
    Baccano

    Ayakashi
    Hakaba Kitaro

    drama
    Honey and Clover
    Millennium Actress
    5 Centimeters Per Second
    Grave of the fireflies

    romance
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

    sci-fi
    Ghost in the Shell
    Appleseed

    comedy
    Nodame Cantabile
    Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu

    fantasy
    Slayers
    Record of Lodoss War
    Brave Story
    escaflowne

    robot
    Robotech/Macross
    Pat Labor
    Gundam Series
    Gasaraki

    super robot
    The Big O
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

I think if you were running a "beginner's guide to anime" I'd only list one of these.... I'd probably go with "Arcadia of my youth"
