Network Access Control

edited November 2008 in Technology
This is a call to the other IT people. Due to some recent work issues, that I can't discuss, we are looking into Network Access Control solutions. I have met with a few consultants who have some great solutions but for outrageous prices ranging from $50,000 to $300,000. The price only includes the hardware and software, no setup and installation. Do you have a Network Access Control solution? What is it?

Open source solutions are not an option because of where I work. This also applies to free solutions.

    Wikipedia knows.

I thought it was a good firewall or something like that, but it actually looks pretty complex. If you need a good firewall for cheap, PFSense on a old computer does wonders.
  • The wikipedia article describes it nicely.

PFSense is open source. I can't use open source or free. It must be a paid for solution.

I have looked into Symantec, Cisco and NetApp solutions. All are wonderful systems but very expensive.

If what you need is what wikipedia describes, I can't see any other option other than an expensive COTS product.

  • Then I doubt you'll find an out of the box solution. Can you give us some sense of the scale of the business you are working for?

The portion that I am in charge of is sitting close to 500 users and 600 computers. In 2 - 3 years another branch is moving here so the number will easily double, probably triple.

I know there are few out of the box solutions. My main goal was to know if anyone used a NAC at their place of work. If so then what NAC did they use.
Do you have a Network Access Control solution? What is it?

  • For those interested, I think I found my solution. Baring any problems, I will go with ForeScout.
