Just hook up your TV or Montior/TV to your desktop and stream shows from websites. Or torrent them and play in your video player of choice.
Right now I've got a Philips DVD player that plays pretty much any file. Best $30 I ever spent. The only problem is that you have to use CD-RWs. They came out with a newer version that can use a thumb drive.
As for hooking up the TV to my desktop, I'm pretty sure that I've only got a VGA port - and even then I probably have just one that's being used by the monitor. My TV doesn't take VGA - it's not even HDTV.
By the time I get the hardware I need, I'd be better off getting a laptop with S-Video or something like that. I've done that before and it's worked pretty well. In the interim, I may just get the new DVD player that can take a thumb drive. Burning CDs gets old fast.
Kilarney, if you want to get rid of Cable TV, get a Mac mini and connect it to the TV. Then install Boxee on it. That's what we do, and it should work perfectly for you. However, I would wait a few weeks. Rumor is that the Mac mini is getting updated pretty soon.
Ok, so I'm looking into getting a Netbook in the near future and my eyes are seating on the Acer One (with windows and a hard drive, bugger me but that's how I like things) and the one model I'm looking at, the A150-Bb seems to be the one I'm wanting to get.
Has anyone else had any Exp. with the Acer One models?
Somewhat in the same category as the netbooks is the current rumor I'm praying to be true of a 7-9 inch iPod Touch coming fall '09. Mmmm...touch is good. I've been searching around keeping my eyes open for a small portable media consumption device and a paperback size device is just about perfect. I hope Apple makes some sort of announcement concerning a larger size iPod Touch device.

We have sold them at my work from the initial launch. They are a pretty good little laptop. The screen is great, keyboard is large for something with a 9" screen. The touch pad is quite fiddly so you might want to get a nice little cordless mouse to go with it.
The only problem that I have with it is the poor battery life. The ones we have only have a 3 cell battery so you would be lucky to get 2.5-3 hours off it. There is a 6 cell battery available which should double that but its a bit pricey.
I picked up the MSI Wind. So far, I love it. I've put OSX on it, and I'm going to use a SD card to run linux on it, too.
i was looking at the dell, but it is way too expensive, when compared with similar options to other netbooks. The wind also gets me a 10" screen and a bigger keyboard.
Does that pick up ethernet? I've been searching this for a bit now. Depending on your distro, there seems to be some problems getting the network card recognized. Ubuntu supposedly works well though.
