    None of them broke my brain, yet. I just haven't had free time at work to keep going to the next level.
  • Yeah, I haven't had the time just yet either.

    Have you looked at any levels of the Expansion pack? Surely you'll agree that Blackpowder is trivial compared to those.

    Sorry, I guess the constant "bumping" of the thread can be annoying. Editing all the solutions into one big post would probably not be so nice either. Maybe I'll just stop here anyway and go enjoy the freezing drizzle outside...
  • I've been ignoring other people's solutions to ones I haven't already solved myself. However, I decided to load up your Focusing Crystal just to peek into the future.

    I never thought of using the glyph of binding before using the glyphs of calcination and transmutation. All my solutions have been based around calinating and transmuting the pieces first, and binding afterward. This changes everything.

    Yeah, on the more complex ones (see Asisite and Rust) you have to do it that way. Otherwise you end up having to design really complex selection forks for the limited sources and several more pipelines for the different parts of a compound.

    If you want to manufacture a compound in the shortest number of cycles you will have to do it both ways, see Resina Draconis (aka F**k this game). I'd be very interested in an 18 cycle solution with less manipulators.

    I've finally had the time to play some more of the game.
    I beat nicnkame change's Aqua Regia:
    63 (7 manipulators, 9 cycles/unit)
    b,10,11;b,3,11;c,13,9;c,1,9;b,6,9;t,10,6;m,3,13,180,1,crolcrolw;m,1,11,270,1,rdcuwwwlo;m,3,9,180,1,rr2ollwwc;

    EDIT: Completely snapped my own Aqua Regia just now:
    44 (4 manipulators, 11 cycles/unit)
    b,4,9;b,10,11;t,8,8;c,8,10;b,9,6;c,2,6;m,10,9,180,1,21r2orrcr22;m,13,11,90,1,crolcurodlw;m,1,9,0,2,ourwclorcdl;m,5,6,90,2,c2rrrl1owll;

    I also beat my own Aqua Fortis:
    36 (3 manipulators, 12 cycles/unit)
    b,9,10;c,7,10;c,3,8;t,3,6;m,13,10,90,2,crol;m,12,10,180,2,odcu;m,7,6,90,3,crrlrorrwwww;

    And here's a similar adaptation on Brimstone:
    36 (3 manipulators, 12 cycles/unit)
    c,3,8;t,3,6;b,8,11;c,6,11;m,7,7,90,3,cr111111rorr;m,12,11,180,3,odcu;m,11,11,90,1,crol;

    I also beat Apreche's Vertigris; turned out very similar to his with 12 cycles/unit, but with one less manipulator. It also uses only one Glyph of Binding.
    72 (6 manipulators, 12 cycles/unit)
    p,10,10;c,1,7;b,4,10;m,2,2,0,2,wwwc22uodwww;m,5,6,90,3,wllorrc2www2;

  • I went back and took a look at my Vertigris solution:

    b,3,11;p,10,10;b,7,8;c,5,6;m,13,10,90,2,cdrolu;m,11,13,270,2,odrclu;m,4,13,180,2,cdrolu;
    m,8,10,0,1,wwclor;m,10,8,90,1,rolwwc;m,10,13,180,2,rolwwc;m,7,10,0,2,rwwclo;m,7,6,90,1,rrorrc;
    m,1,11,0,2,odrclu;m,7,11,180,2,cr11ol;m,8,6,270,1,wwcuod;

    11 manipulators x 6 cycles (minimum possible) / unit == 66

    I think that with some rearrangement of parts it may be possible to shave off another manipulator (the one at the end). It is interesting, that for the simple puzzles solutions with minimal numbers of manipulators are very hard to beat by going to minimal number of cycles (e.g. Brimstone and Aqua Fortis can be done with a 6 cycle but they require at least 6 manipulators making the solution equal). With the more complex molecules, on the other hand, going for the smallest number of cycles is the better approach.

    Ehehehehehehe.
    You're going to need to do it with 9 manipulators to beat that.

    I've tried a lot to cut out that top manipulator also, but it just doesn't seem to work.

  • It's interesting to see how many people get replay value from this game by trying to optimize. I just try to beat the level, and then I move on.
  • edited February 2009
    Since we came up with our optimization criteria of choice I've been trying to make designs as optimal as I can from the moment I start them. I only finished Black Powder just then, and I won't try to make it better unless someone beats me.
    It seems to produce elegant designs.
