Fixing scratched CDs/DVDs?

edited January 2009 in Technology
Does anyone have any suggestions about possibly fixing scratched CDs or DVDs? I've heard about the toothpaste and the highlighter methods, but I'm not about to just go slap a bunch of toothpaste on a DVD that I payed 20 bucks for. Just asking before I buy some used anime DVDs.

  • There's those "CD Doctor" things, and they work. But you only need to fix scratches if they affect the readability of the disk, and many do not. My friend abuses his discs like hell, but they all still work.

my mom uses silver polish, but it's all the same. All it does is sand a tiny bit of the top of the disk, making the scratches less deep (and thus more readable). What you need to do is, get a soft cloth, get some toothpaste or so, and lightly rub it in.

(It'll work most of the time, but only if the scratches aren't THAT bad)

Remember, if you scratch the underside of a CD, you can repair it. If you ever damage the top, that's it, the disc is truly buggerized.

  • Don't buy those stupid doctor things. They're the biggest rip-off in the universe. If you have a DVD that is scratched so much it doesn't work anymore, then go for the toothpaste. If it doesn't work, you haven't lost anything. If it does work, make sure you rip that DVD while you can. If it's a movie DVD, just get the movie from piratebay. At the very least, you can rent the DVD from blockbuster or Netflix, and then rip it. That's cheaper than the disc doctor crap.

This is true. If it won't play, the toothpaste thing will at worst make it still not work...
    I payed 20 bucks for....used
You're overpaying. The most I've paid for a used anime DVD is like $12 or 13. For $20 you may as well be getting new DVDs...or at best I hope it's a rare DVD.

Otherwise everything that's worth saying has already been said. But remember, if it plays, don't fuck around with it, even if there are scratches.

Thanks, and no, the $20 were about DVD's that I've had, not anime box sets that I am about to buy. I'm getting those for like $20-$30...
