What is the best (or easiest) way to recover data from a laptop drive that will not boot?

Wait, wait, wait.... I know this one... access the backup you have on another hard drive!

Yeah. Obey Scott's mantra: Don't store important data on a laptop.

Some sort of Linux live CD to see if you can at least read data from it

It's not my drive.
I was thinking of either:
1. Getting an adapter kit that would allow me to put the drive into a desktop machine.
2. Using a 'Nix boot CD and mounting the drive and a USB HD and moving the data.
