NVIDIA Ion

edited February 2009 in Technology
If you didn't see it at CES, NVIDIA has a new platform called Ion. Basically they take an Atom CPU, just like the ones in netbooks, and combine it with a GeForce 9400M and put it in a tiny box. You would think that this would be really slow and useless, but actually it's not so bad. See, netbooks don't have big-time GPUs. Even if they did, the screens they have are so bad it wouldn't matter. But if you take the same cheapo parts, and put a real GPU in there, even a lower end one, it's pretty impressive. Apparently, it's even good enough to play Left 4 Dead in HD, and more.

Rumor has it that this will be the stuff powering the next Mac mini. if that's the case, count me in. Of course, that rumor is true, it might be a better idea to get another Ion-based machine that will no doubt cost less than the overpriced Apple product.

It's something to look out for.
