Batman: Arkham Asylum

edited August 2009 in Video Games
Well, the demo is out on the 360 (I have no idea if it's out on the PS3 yet) and the game looks awesome. I'm loving the fact that it isn't just some beat-em-up and that you actually need to be stealthy and take down goons in a thoughtful manner as so that you won't be caught. You can't just burst into a room throwing Batarangs at every living thing.

  • It is out for PS3 as well (the demo.) I've been looking forward to this game, and having finally played a little bit of it its nice to see that it looks like its going to be really good. It's certainly possible it could still fall apart later in the game, but at least the core mechanics seem to be really solid and fun.

I have played this demo and am very excited about it since a lot of Batman games I've played well past the SNES years were pretty bad. I have a lot of hope that it will bring about an era awesome Batman games.

  • I just tried out the demo and it's fun; it looks to be the best Batman game since the Adventures of Batman and Robin on the SNES. I am concerned that the gameplay mechanics, while innovative, might be too specific to the environment which could lead to either a short or a repetitive game, like Assassin's Creed. I guess we'll know soon enough.

The character designs look great; I'd say Batman is the weakest out of what I saw. The costume itself is growing on me, but he seems a little to built. It would be great if you could unlock an Adam West version complete with voice acting. Of course then you would probably have to fight off the Asylum staff as they attempt to lock your crazy ass up.

It's good to hear Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy and Arleen Sorkin back in their animated series roles.
  • Is this better or worse than Batman Forever for the SNES/Genesis?

Anything is better than that, that was an abortion on Batman games and was coded and designed shittily.

You can actually play this game and it is actually fun, so yes, it is better than Batman Forever on the SNES/Genesis.
  • But all of the enemies had unique names!

I can't wait to fight the Killer Croc in that game as he sounds like a challenge.

  • The demo was way to short, there was some good stuff and some bad stuff there:
-The stealth part is a joke (at least what we got in the demo).
-Combat kinda brakes down to left clicking like crazy with some very forgiving "click events" in the middle to counter.
-I liked the character design, everyone seems to be built like a brick shit house.
-Game is easy to figure out and you get to enjoy some nice moves (even if its just left clicking like crazy)
-Bullet time events, while good the first two times, it gets boring really quick.
  • Is there any detectiving? Or better yet, sneaking into places to surprise and intimidate people, then slipping out the window while they're facing the other way, before they even notice? I'd love to see a Batman game that has that kind of stuff. Those are the best parts of Batman.
  • Pressing one of the buttons puts you into "detective mode" which basically gives you x-ray vision and highlights any structures or objects that can be used/manipulated, but it's not really what can be considered detective work. There's only a limited section of the demo where you can exercise any stealth and it amounts to up high = safe, down low = danger. If the demo is an accurate display of your abilities, I can see the game getting stale pretty quickly.

I wish they had worked in some kind of paranoia gimmick where the more fearful your prey is, the easier it is to take them out. That way you would have a greater incentive to pull off more Batman-esque stunts instead of glide-kick, head smash, fly away, repeat for win.

There is supposed to be, but not in the demo. They could only show off so much of the game.
  • I got the paranoia thing to work somewhat in the one room with the 5 or 6 guys with guns you have to take out. The first two I took out quietly, but the third and forth I took out quickly but in a noisy way. So there was one guy left freaking out, shooting at any little noise he heard, moving really slow.

Anyway, I agree that if this is all you do it could potentially get really old really fast. However you have to remember that this is a demo of the early part of the game, these parts are meant as the basic tutorial so its likely they are going to build on the groundwork they set up in these sections of the game.

I have a friend who got the game and I played through it for an hour and I gotta say that even though the action is somewhat repetitive, the content is more than enough reason to own the game. There are a lot of riddles to solve which actually make you think and the tapes you collect just add to the dark tone that this game flaunts in front of you. Also, given that almost every Batman villain imaginable appears in this one game (including some obscure ones like Killer Croc, Blue Beetle, and Maxie Zeus), it just provides multiple styles and levels of gameplay for a gamer to enjoy.

  • It is a really good game, I finished it a few days ago. Although you do fight guys a lot, it tends to not feel too repetitive due to it being a little different each time. Which either makes it more difficult each time, or causes you to have to strategize differently, or both. The story though is what really makes the game, I found myself a lot of times wanting to sort of free roam and look for the hidden stuff, but was compelled to continue to do the story stuff instead.

I'm really looking forward to what rocksteady (the developer) does next.

I raise a very questioning eyebrow at you, sir. Since when the hell was Killer Croc Obscure - He's got his own action figures, was a common villain in BTAS, and has been in the Batman Comics fairly regularly since the eighties, and Blue beetle's never been a villain(he's even in the JLA, and will probably be returning in the near future as the black lantern).

I don't actually follow the underwear pervert stuff that much at all, BTAS is where I draw the line. I never got to the point where Blue Beetle is encountered so I only know this from what was told on gaming sites.

If BTAS is where you draw the line, then you should know that killer Croc isn't obscure in any way, at the least.
  • After playing this for a bit on a friend's Xbox 360, it has caused me to finally break down and purchase a system. Any suggestions on which system to buy (arcade, elite, etc)?
  • The elite. The arcade has no hard drive, so you can't download anything unless you pay up the ass for a 360 hard drive. See if you can get one of the old elites before they get in the new ones since they are taking out a lot of the A/V connection cables.

Why do they still sell Arcades anyway? Sure it's a cheaper alternative, but it has no purpose whatsoever other than being a shell that only needs more money spent to get the full potential out of it!
  • They have the arcade so they can say they have an Xbox 360 for under $200.

Also, normal non-gamer types buy it and do just fine because they aren't playing the hardcore game like Haloz and such. They just want to play some Uno or whatever.

Theoretically, if you could break through all of Microsoft's proprietary BS, you could get a decent hard drive (e.g. 1TB) instead. It ain't happening, though.
Also, having a crappy Xbox 360 model available encourages you to buy the good one:
