"Palosky declined to comment precisely on Pelosi's forecast, saying her comment seemed more about politics than policy. "It’s not our role to police such comments," he said. "If you want to know what members of Congress are doing, you have to speak to members of Congress.”

His nudge led us to call U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Lewisville, among a handful of physicians in Congress and an opponent to the Democrats' proposal.

Burgess told us it's often true that the ins and outs of legislation aren't widely known until after a measure passes into law; that held true, for instance, for the Republican-steered measure providing government aid toward prescription drugs for seniors.

Pelosi's "right," Burgess said, though "I don’t think that’s a good strategy (to declare as much). I wouldn’t recommend anyone actually broadcasting that.""

I mean really just keep taking those statements out of context.
  • That whole line of conversation was because republicans were attempting to slow the bill down to the point of killing it. They wanted it read at length on the floor, thrown out and restarted. Knowing full well any attempt like that would kill the bill. The bill was getting worked on for a year. I think they had enough time.
  • But we have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of controversy
    Isn't quite the same as
... told us that we can't see what is in the bill until AFTER we pass it
They way you phrased it makes me think that Pelosi was purposely doing something underhanded such that no one could read it before it was passed. Like it was some sort of secret bill.

I confess I can not watch the video until I get home. I shall enjoy doing so!

Animated gif showing growth of income inequality. (Greener means more inequality.) Interesting how it starts in the south and NY, then spreads.

  • So the House passed a bill yesterday that would fund the Government, but defund Obamacare in the process. And it's unlikely to pass the Senate (and even if it did, Obama would veto it). End result is two weeks of back and forth nonsense until either an 11th hour deal is passed (unlikely for various reasons), OR the government shuts down (probably what's going to happen).

It looks like the Republicans are, in fact, doubling down on crazy. Here's hoping it backfires spectacularly.
  • If Obamacare is so bad shouldn't the Republicans just let it happen and then reap the benefits of a dissatisfied public in the next election?
  • One would think.
  • I think the greatest legitimate fear of the ACA is that employers will either dump healthcare for workers (fine is about 20% of cost to provide insurance) or will cut worker hours to avoid having to cover them at all.

In that way the ACA may end up hurting the people it was meant to help.

My ex works for Stop and Shop and she pays her union for her health care ($5 a week) yet S&S is already cutting workers hours to 30 or less a week. Which is kind of weird to me because according to what she has told me the union is responsible for her health insurance. From what she has been told her health care cost will go from $5 a week to $50 a week. Which means she will go from half an hour of work per week 'paying' for health insurance to five hours a week. $20 a month to $200 a month!
  • Employers have been cutting back health coverage, or pushing costs to employees for years. I think it's more likely that employers will use ACA as cover for cutbacks they were planning to do anyway.

The biggest mistake in the ACA was tying requirements to a hard weekly hourly limit instead of something more proportional. In fact, lots of labor regulations could use that kind of updating.
  • Also normally with a bill if they see weird side effects like that they would adjust it but since congress is hell bent on just destroying things. No one is willing to do the fine tuning that every major program has needed...
  • How do you fine tune employers opting to pay the fine and drop coverage and/or cutting people's hours?
  • Make the fines bigger?
  • And it looks like the Republican Primary race is on. Who do you want to be Hillary's opponent in 2016: Cruz, Rubio, or Paul?

  • Why can't we have a sane republican run for President? He could ride in on his unicorn!
  • I'm not weighing in on any Presidential speculation until after midterms. It's a moral issue.

I'm a radical. No Christmas music before Thanksgiving.

    But yes, like that.

  • Why does the right elect more crazy people than the left? Is it just a religious thing (majority of crazy on the right is inspired by religion) a location thing or what?
  • I think its a key difference between British and American politics. There seems to be, dependant on what side your on, a clear right and wrong a good and bad. For the UK we are just trying to ellect the least smellyist poop, the problem being that all the poop smells.

Whom looks to be the for runner for the Republicans for the next round and am I right in thinking that the Hilldog is going for president?

I can think of two reasons off the top of my head for the "crazy."

    1) The modern GOP has become a party that prizes ideology over competence and governance. That makes "crazy" an asset for most, not a liability.

    2) The crazies are realizing that they are becoming wildly out of step with the political mainstream of the country. It's like a wild animal trapped into a corner, it tends to lash out. It's an emotional response, not a reasoned one.

She hasn't announced any intention to run, so it's hard to say at the moment. That said, given how the Republicans have been doing and the possibility of Ted Cruz being the Republican nominee, I think it's going to be the Democrat's election to lose in 2016.
  • So who is Ted Cruz and where does he rank of the scale? and what makes him strong enough to contend against the Democrats?
  • Judging based on solely on The Daily Show, he is pants-on-head-retarded, but anyone can edit a 21 hour tirade to make you look bad.
  • Considering that it was not a filibuster and all he succeeded in doing is screw over the House by leaving them less time to deal with the amended bill that will return to the House?
  • It boils down to do I need to strike the US of my grand tour in 2016 for fear some strange right wing state that still holds a grudge form the 18th centuary.

Well, you did give them a 21 hour tirade to work with :P

  • Me and dad declared him the craziest man in the Senate the day he was elected. He was saying that George Soros was sending ecoterrorists to destroy golf courses because reasons. He went on to say insanities that include claiming that Chuck Hagel is too weak to be Secretary of War.
