$5 is retarded, no one will pay that. $1 however...
And yet Blizzard has been able to make piles of money off its $25 vanity mount in World of Warcraft, a pony that looks like it's made of jello. Perhaps turrets or other virtual goods with only slight gameplay advantages can't command $5, but social currency items have the potential to bring in far more.
Perhaps that means they should give that turret some serious bling...
I would totally get into a GoI MMO, particularly if the crew was in on it. Assuming the following: 1. Enjoyable gameplay. Planetside had some great things going for it for an MMOFPS, but succumbed to it's own players' incessant bitching. 2. Focus on teamwork and cooperative gameplay. 3. ACTUALLY being real shooting, not select a target and wait for gun to fire. 4. Variety of guns and ships available to players. 5. Customizable avatars. Sure it's cosmetic, but let's face it, that was the best part of City of Heroes. 6. Customizable ships. In Planetside, one neat custom thing clans could do was have a custom logo that appeared on everyone in the clan. When there was a Sturmgrenadier tank platoon running around, you knew it because you could see the hornet icon on all the tanks and troops. How awesome would it be to have your own bigass icon on the side of your blimp (or at least a selection to pick from)? Even if you have simple cosmetic stuff to stick on ships, it can be fun. 7. Factions. Stick some PVP faction stuff in the game, even on some servers, and it'll get nuts. Even if it's just two factions. 8. No microtransactions. I will never, ever play a game based on that. The ONLY exception would be if the game itself were absolutely free or really cheap and microtransactions did not in any way handicap players who chose NOT to use them. No one wants to play "Whoever spends the most money wins the game." 9. If you really want to get crazy, make floating or stationary clan bases. Giant dirigible that can act as a home-base for clans. Stick some automatic defenses on that sucker and now you have a challenge for clan on clan action.
Hell, if the game gets srs bsns into a beta, I could let Sturmgrenadier know and they'd be glad to help. They're serious gamers and give good feedback...and also really good at accidentally breaking games.
What would get me to play an MMO: Online 2D Zelda gameplay. Can build stuff. Farms, villages, clock-towers.. Can, at any time, effect any other player I come into contact with (With inevitable consequences.). Some kind of DM system to stop people going crazy. Start in anarchy and see how people organize, Habitat style. Not having to walk everywhere. Horses, carts, airships, flying whales.
Project D.O.R.F in a massive, persistent world. New players' Dwarves all start in different locations far away from others, but the fortresses exist in the same world.

All players start in a room with no doors and starve to death. YAY!
A game of yours got on Steam...in my eyes you guys are professional.
Well, I don't think Steam has an approval process, so that might not be the best test for professionalism. Making the update news that displays to every Steam client, however...
I'd have thought the Steam approval process was pretty stringent, seeing as it would be an easy way to get a virus onto a lot of computers.
Well, yeah, as far as code content goes, I'd bet it would have to be stringent. However, I have to wonder what the gameplay content requirements are like. I mean, could someone like Cactus get a game on Steam? I hope so.

Steam does indeed have an approval process and we have to sign a contract and everything. They can pick and choose, if they want.

Also comes with a +5 Flyness stat boost.
