Running for Local office.

edited August 2009 in Politics
As one of the more political members of the FRC, I had been asked to run for the position of councilperson in my hometown. Running against 4 incumbents that had changed sides yet again (originally they were republicans, who changed to democrats to get elected and now are republicans again). In a few weeks my campaign will be starting to move (local campaigns try and get out just two months before the election to make sure they don't over-saturated people not that off year elections ever have a great turn out). Anyone else ever run for a political office or thinking about it?

  • I thought about running for some class/dorm office, but then I realized that those elections are purely popularity contests and that I would have absolutely no chance whatsoever in winning.
  • Yeah, I'm planning on running for governor or Earth βηθα in the far-off year of 2525. Good luck Crems.

Excuse me? I never bid on that. I'm too busy preparing for the 2525 universal elections for Earth βηθα. Also, no sarcasm in the post you quoted, that'd be rude, sarcastically wishing Crems luck with his campaign to get rid of those asshat party-switch vote-beggars.

We should totally ignore the fact that I changed my registation from republican to democrat last year. :-p

Ah, but you didn't do that to GET votes, but to give votes. Important difference if you ask me. The former is despicable.

Cremlian depending how dirty the local election gets I wonder if they would bring up that fact even though they did it themselves. :p

Sadly our local elections here is based on your last name recognition. With new people moving to my city its gradually changing but the fight to get a council seat is fierce. Lots of name calling and old people saying how bad X family is and they can't be trusted. This used to be a small farming town but is breaking away from that gradually after all the allotments went up for people to move closer to work. We have easy access to a main interstate and 2 state routes make up the center of the city. With that it is easy access for travel to the places of employment. Last year when we had our elections these people were the main reason a younger person got into city council and he argues the other members often. He is also the reason why we have more say in the meetings unlike before were you had to submit questions before hand.

Recently he was able to get an ordnance overturned that required that businesses be approved before opening up. Since then a lot more jobs have been created in the city.

I think that probably goes in any local elections. A friend of mine, along with his sister, had a history of drug problems, and his stepdad ran for some important judge position. His opponent dragged my friend's past drug problems out publicly. This is a suburb of Los Angeles -- not exactly small town.
  • Figured I'd give an update, A Month away from the election and it couldn't be going smoother. I figured there would be more resistance and the incumbents would have more support however nearly every house I run into is very supportive and at least marginally interested in supporting my ticket (the four democrats running for council)

Also I'm reading through Sanctuary the last few weeks while I'm campaigning which is somewhat coloring my perspective of politics :-p Turning me back into an idealist or something (especially the fact that the election comes before my 30th birthday ^_^).. If only I had a friend in the underworld to work towards the same goals :-p
  • No way to run as an independent Cremlian?
  • No way to run as an independent Cremlian?
If you're serious about getting elected, you pretty much need to join a party.

Yea, that would be kinda suicidal.... If you notice the few people who have successfully been reelected as a independent are generally in a party first and then leave it.

Plus, I am a democrat, sure I don't agree with everything in the platform and I am sympathetic to third parties. But on a ideological level I agree with the Democrats the most.

    My Local campaign newspaper article.

    The other guys

  • Good luck with the interview! (maybe retroactively)
  • The bigger paper's article.

I like that right after Zygmont (one of my opponents) says that we are talking about insignificant things, I am quoted as running because of unprofessional attitude. Zing.
  • Man, the comments coming up on this article are amusing but sorta scary...
  • See ScoJo run. Run Scojo, run!
  • You should completely call out the people in the comments; This is new media, dammit.
  • See there is an issue with commenting directly, you just open yourself up to attack and lend some cred to their words. What appears to be happening is a surgates are using this chance to vent their opinions... in a sorta Greater internet fuckwad theory sort of way. Not sure if it's worth commenting on.

Plus there's a lot more people who can shit-cock you than you could ever refute on your own.

  • Weeee, Election day is today... All my street walking had better pay off :-p
  • Good Luck.

Have you been offered Secret Service protection yet?
  • Well, I didn't win but I came extremely close and our campaign to get one democrat out of the 4 running elected succeeded. I'll post back when I have the full details.
  • Good job on the minor victory even if you didn't win getting a candidate you approve of in is a good start. Good news from Ohio too! We just approved casinos in Cleveland, Toledo, Cincinnati, and Columbus. This is a major boost we need here locally because jobs are hard to come by that pay anything worth while.

Our local Library levy failed also which is good news because it was too costly. The city has been throwing money everywhere recently. The library bought property for a new library before they even had a levy for a new one; that got voted down. Then they tried to put this one forward and city taxes are expensive already.

    Hatboro Council
    4/4 100.00%
    Under Votes 352
    Over Votes 0

    Vote Count Percent
    Dem - Patricia Fleming 714 13.26%
    Dem - Scott Johnson 642 11.93%
    Dem - Laurie Vasoli 667 12.39%
    Dem - Richard Seeds 610 11.33%
    Rep - John J. Zygmont 701 13.02%
    Rep - Vincent Lasorsa 693 12.87%
    Rep - Bill Tompkins 706 13.12%
    Rep - David A. Rich 650 12.08%
    Total 5,383 100.00%

I lost in the what I believe was the closest election in local Hatboro's history. Literally there were only 51 people who preferred Vincent Lasorsa (4th place) to me, so I guess I just have to convince 26 people by next election ^_^ but in the end we did change the face of council and moved the council back into democratic control. (by beating David Rich who only got 8 votes more then I did, for a sitting incumbent) A damn good first outing. Only 1,235 people out of 7,393 people who live in hatboro showed up (about 16% of the population). I also like the amount of under-votes that were not cast in the race, 352 people came in to vote in Hatboro and didn't vote for Council....

  • Congratulations for giving it a go. That's more than most people do.

Find out who voted and target them next time.
  • That's a fair showing. At least you weren't in last place.
