FF1: Why is there nothing else like it?

why does no one do the whole pick your class at the beginning.
It gave the game replay value and was a lot of fun to eff around with.

    Yeah but I'm talking an RPG, D&D; is fun and all but its hard to get every one together to play it.
    Plus while D&D; and FF are similar there different at the same time, know what i mean?
