"V"

edited November 2009 in Everything Else
Yesterday I watched the pilot episode for the remake of the 1980s miniseries "V", and during the weekend I watched the original miniseries on the Sci Fi channel. I used to watch it back in the day in my country. I gotta say that the spanish transalation helped a lot. Because, the 80's miniseries had some really bad acting.
Back to the new series. I was gladly surprised of how good this new approach to "V' was done. A lot of interesting ideas on the first episode and the pacing is a lot faster than the 80s one. I will definately be recording this show from now on. Hopefully it won't become anothere Heroes.

  • It's a miniseries right? So I doubt it will go the route of Heroes. I liked what I saw, but I'm going to give it a another episode.

They were showing the original on Sci Fi, but I didn't watch it. I heard a lot of crappy things about it. Especially the ending.
  • I missed it last night. I did see a very funny review 'V' aims at Obamamania. Read it for a good laugh!

The original is a miniseries. I'm pretty sure this is just a standard show.
  • I real really wanted to see this last night but I of course was working the election, I'll probably check it out as soon as possible because I really liked the first miniseries.
  • Does the "V" stand for vagina?

Stand for "Visitors" but I am pretty sure some of them might have one. If I remember the 80s series, there used to be baby human lizards :P
  • Hulu won't have the show up until Saturday. :(

Bah. Who cares if they have to wait? The content will still be the same. If you really can't wait, then EZTV it.

It actually comes to stand for "Victory," in reference to the freedom-fighter movement that develops. That's why the V logo design is a splash. Keep watching.

Also, the show has a 13-episode run -- which I suspect is more a back-door pilot than a miniseries.

    I can't find it. :P

Actually, it went the other way around - one of the Visitors impregnated a human female, producing fraternal twins. The male died and female of the twins ended up being the "star-child", the deus ex machina that ended up pulling the humans' bacon out of the fire at the end of the third episode of the second miniseries. Seeing the reruns over last weekend made me realize how badly that show has handled the test of time (bad 80's hair and fashions, bad 80's background music, and really bad acting.)
  • It has Morena Baccarin, Joel Gretsch, and Alan Tudyk in it, so I will be watching at least 1 more episode. The first one wasn't bad.

Overall, I was reminded very much of a particular episode of Stargate where a "benevolent" alien race forms a partnership with earth and hijinks (and time travel!) ensue.
  • There is one plot point I can never wrap my head around in these sorts of series. How does one intelligent species decide another intelligent species is a good food source? How can they then live among their food and hang out with them?

Can you imagine if cows were able to to speak and conduct scientific experiments? Would we eat an animal that was as intelligent as ourselves that we communicate with on a daily basis?

If it still tasted as good, and did not have the capability to retaliate or eat us, then the sad-but-true answer is "indubitably, I think, yes."

  • Just what I was thinking of.

I mean, in some parts of the world people eat monkeys. It's not that far a leap. Animals are not as far from us as people tend to think.

Yep. Have y'all seen The Cove? People eat dolphins and whales, too.
  • Fakku yuuu dorufiiiin!
  • Fakku yuuu dorufiiiin!
I don't know what that means, but I am choosing to interpet it to mean "Fuck you, dolphins!" I now believe that Emi hates dolphins and eats them for dinner every night.
    Who is the monster now?!

  • It's a South Park reference, in an episode this week where they were trying to stop the Japanese fishing fleets from whaling.

  • Eating intelligent animals (dolphins, monkeys, etc) is not the same as eating intelligent animals that look just like you that you interact with on a daily basis in both personal and business relationships. Twilight anyone?
  • Twilight anyone?
    No, thank you.

Why don't you? The entire series is free and streaming on their website.

Hey, Twilight deals with some very deep philosophical issues . . . for thirteen year old girls.

Like what do with a determined stalker - Fall in love with him so deeply that you're devoid of any other character traits beyond clumsy. Obviously.

Yes. There are many lessons to be learned from Twilight.
