  • This is the End is one of the most self-indulgent movies I've ever seen. But you know what? It's actually fun and entertaining. All these movie actors pretty much play variations of themselves in their movies, so why not own up to the fact and just use their real names? It's very laddish bloke humor, but I'm a bloke, so it hit home with me.
  • Luke, I really enjoy your one-paragraph movie reviews.
  • X-Men Days of Future Past
Uncannily terrible story. The writer thought it would be great to mash 3 future stories together to make one laughably stupid one rather than keeping to the simple Days of Future Past (mixing the Bishop storyline with Age of Apocolypse and Days of Future Past).
Then again they couldn't sell it as a Wolverine movie, the only reason they can make money from this franchise. I can't wait till Disney buys back the rights for the X-men and they get the same treatment as the rest of the Marvel lineup. Sony just lets the films get worse and worse.

You would never think that the movie plot is stupider than the comics but this movie succeeds. Now that I've said that The Walking Dead TV show is boring and times more melodramatic than the comic.

    Guardians of the Galaxy
Very fun movie, some very humorous moments through out, very much in tone with how the source material is presented. They did Thanos really well, I was surprised.
I did get over hyped about it through the Internet and friends though.
I will definitely watch this again. Glen Close was great and this is the best Vin Diesel film ever.
  • I've been rewatching romance films and rom-coms I liked it my younger days. Mostly, this has resulted in my donating a bunch of my DVD's. Serendipity and Bridget Jones 1 & 2 were by far the worst. Why did I ever like these films?
  • I watched the new Godzilla, it was pretty fun and I enjoyed they took the effort to put people in almost every shot to give perspective. However I was waiting for those MUTO's to start sexing it up in the movie.

Knights of Badassdom, a mediocre comedy/horror movie about Larping. There was some funny parts but in general it was as typical as you would expect the plot to be.
  • Luke, Limitless vs Lucy. Which one is a better take on the genre?
  • I've not seen Limitless.
  • Just realized final Hobbit is next week.

Wait for fan release to condense all three Hobbit films into a single, better, version.

The Hobbit movies are without a doubt shameless money-grab to split one book into three movies. They are also inferior to the LotR movies.

That being said, I find it hilarious that the geek community seems to love LotR extended edition, but are down on Hobbit being extended. What if Hobbit was just one movie with an 8 hour extended edition? Just because the arbitrary number of partitions is different they get upset.
  • My only complaints about the Hobbit:

    1. Bilbo hardly appears in the second one
    2. Should have focused more on the music and singing
    3. Should have been two movies
    4. Skip the Legolas surfing garbage
    5. No Elf/Dwarf love drama

I agree with... all of those. Moar dwarf singing!

To be fair, the Hobbit is one, fairly small, book. LOTR is three giant novels.

  • I'm ok with Dwarf/Elf drama if we get to see some Dwarf/Elf action :-p

Plus make the sense with music and singing and perfect movie!
  • I watched Edge of Tomorrow or All you need is Kill or Live Die Repeat and found it to be pretty good. Except the ending was a huge cop out and was kinda lazy. Other than that, a fun movie with great action, and a lot of groundhog day like humor added in. Tom Cruise maybe crazy but I still love him in nearly everything he's been in.

I have now seen Limitless. It's a better movie than Lucy in terms of an exploration of increased intelligence, but Lucy is a better movie in terms of wacky scifi superhuman action. Overall I'd say Limitless is a better movie, and the one most worth watching. Then again, you might as well just read Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, as that's still the canonical take on the genre for me.

However, it was fun to watch them both in two weeks, one on a flight to South America and one on the way home again. It's a fun compare and contrast exercise.

"Humans only use 10% of their brain":
Lucy - foundational for the science of the movie.
Limitless - a throwaway line to get across a simple idea by a non-scientist drug dealer.

    Old actor to bring gravitas:
    Lucy - Morgan Freeman
    Limitless - Robert De Niro

Visual style to show increased intelligence:
Lucy - crazy stuff seemed to be based on species-level shared knowledge. Spliced in stuff from nature documentaries.
Limitless - clips from the previously forgotten memories of Bradley Cooper. So when he gets into a fight, it shows clips from Bruce Lee movies and self defense instructional courses.

    Voice over:
Lucy - Morgan Freeman literally lectures the audience with cod science.
Limitless - probably the weakest element of the movie for me, as it could have held up with the purely visual storytelling in most cases. Also it was badly written and badly read by Cooper.

Increased intelligence means you become more emotionally:
Lucy - distant. More robotic. Emotions and human connections get in the way of the new brain powers.
Limitless - aware. Greater intelligence allows for better interactions and understanding of others, even though sometimes manipulative.

Drug causes increase of brain power:
    Lucy - exponentially.
    Limitless - periodically.

    Does the drug kill you?
Lucy - no but yes but no but yes but god.
Limitless - yes but no but yes but apparently not.

    Impossibly fast at typing?
    Lucy - stupidly.
Limitless - novel in four days.

    New fighting style:
    Lucy - superhero.
    Limitless - messy but clever.

    Location:
Lucy - you can't fly between continents that quickly.
Limitless - the world revolves around Manhattan.

    New brain powers used for:
    Lucy - punching.
Limitless - money and politics. And fucking.
  • The KITE live action was a ninety nine cent rental over the weekend. I was overcharged it turnes out.

They nerfed the shit out of Sawa and most of the changes they made to the plot are dumb and/or add nothing to the story.
  • Went to see Top Five. It's great! Chris Rock finally made a very, very good movie. The pacing stood out to me. It's a semi-serious comedy, and every time it is about to dive into deeper seriousness, a freight train of laughter arrives to interrupt that thought. This only happens a few times throughout the film, but they are all perfectly timed, and allow the experience to continue as a great balance of comedy and drama.

Did you see Good Hair? I thought that was a great film.
  • No, but only because I forgot about it. Sounds like a good documentary and I definitely do want to see it.
  • Two Days in New York is a good Chris Rock movie.
  • Hobbit 3: The Battle of Five Armies is shit. It starts good, with Smaug attacking Laketown. Then the rest of the first half is okay. Then there was an intermission.

Once the movie started again, it was like someone had replaced the good movie with a shit movie. Everything from then on was the worst action and worst acting and worst storytelling and worst plot holes out of all 6 LOTR movies. It's big step down from the previous two Hobbits.

It's a real pity that the best movie out of all 6 is the first. I watched them all in the cinema when they came out, and Fellowship of the Rings is the only one I've ever watched all the way through again. And I've watched it multiple times.
  • Boyhood is one of those weird movies that is 100% experimental film making, but when you're watching it you forget that and are just sucked in. For a movie made over 12 years and somehow edited together almost seamlessly, it has remarkably few missteps. Sometimes the acting is a bit weak, but that's not a surprise considering the time between casting the actors and them taking on dramatic scenes could be up to 10 years and three growth spurts later! And for such a long movie, there was never a moment when I found it dragging or slow going.

I still really like the second one, which I think gets the least recognition of any of them. I come to you now, at the turn of the tide!
  • All of the stuff at Helm's Deep in the Two Towers is excellent. Gandalf turning up at the end is one of the best moments in the entire series (and yet another moment ripped off by The Battle of Five Armies). Stuff with the Ents and Saruman is pretty good too. But the rest just doesn't make for good movie material. I've watched big parts of it since it left the cinema, but found myself skipping forward through some sections.

Sorry if I care about horse people.

Horse people fine. That leads up to Helm's Deep. Frodo Sam yawn. Aragorn Legolas Gimli running sigh.

Oh, you can't forget the other good part.

Agent Smith: Mr. Gorn. You want this Narsil I reforged for you? This pointy bit cut Sauron up pretty bad. Also, me giving this to you also symbolizes me granting you permission to fuck my elfy daughter.

Ranger Bro: I didn't need your permission, but I'll take your pointy bit all the same.
  • Okay. How about we strip Frodo and Sam and Gollum from the movie entirely, as they don't interact with the rest in any way, and just slow it down. Then they can have their own movie...

Wait a moment! That's kinda like in the book!
