A truly great trumpet player passed away last night. I managed to see him preform a couple years ago and he still managed to tear that horn up like nobody's business. His tradition of culling the very best of young musical talent into his band also means there's plenty of accomplished musicians out there who owe him their careers. He started himself when he was only 13 and played with the likes of Ellington, Basie, Kenton, and many others. While these old jazz greats start passing on, one wonders what the jazz landscape is going to become, and who, if anyone, is going to step up and take their place.
