Mexico trying to ban Twitter

edited March 2010 in Technology
This year came with a tax increase in telecommunications, which translated in higher Internet costs. And now this, how can a country expect to advance and be of global relevance when they try so hard to cripple technology?

  • While this is a loss for Mexican techoprogressives, this pales in comparison to the myriad other problems Mexico is having.
  • Drug wars in the north, Anarchist separatists in the south. I think maybe they are things that should be resolved first, frankly taxing internet companies is probably the responsible thing to do, as funding the security forces is kinda a priority.
  • Why don't they just send a bunch of fake twitter postings to the feed? Or does twitter not work that way in this case?

    Internet companies will just leave.

That has to be the dumbest logic ever, 'clamping down' on social networking won't stop criminals from being criminals. That's like saying we should ban fire to stop arson. All this will serve to do is make them irrelevant even more than they already are (as pointed out earlier).

The real solution is obviously to ban criminals.

But seriously, to deal with a problem you have to actually do something to change the source of the problem. Attempting to treat the symptoms will only limit law abiding citizens. The people using this for criminal purposes will just find another way to keep doing their criminal activities.
