Investing for reals.

edited May 2010 in Everything Else
So lets say I have 10-20k that I want to move from matured bonds to a more entertaining investment. Lets say I wanted to invest in a few choice stocks (now that it appears the stock market is taking a dive and some bargains will be had), how would I actually go about doing this in the most efficient and controlling way (without giving a large margin to some stock broker).

Obviously I should go to a forum on stock trading for this but I figured I'd get any advice from the forums.

  • Just use E-Trade, Scottrade, or one of those sites. Also, if you're going for retirement, a 401k or IRA is probably a good idea. You can go to a bank, or a place like Fidelity, to do that.
  • If you are looking for short term investments, check out C.D.s. If you are looking for retirement, then take Scott's advice. If you are looking to invest in stocks, you may want to speak to a financial planner or broker in order to choose between mutual funds and individual stock purchases for various sums of money.
If you are really, really confident in your investment choices and knowledge of the market, then use Etrade and the like. I can only say that what is usually a nominal broker fee (if you shop around), I feel more comfortable working with an expert than solely relying on my lay knowledge or spending an inordinate amount of time researching and staying up on the market.
  • I think you should put all $20,000 in JasonTech LTD. In turn, I will use it to buy steak sandwiches and porn.
  • Invest in the Olsen Brewing Company. I promise I won't drink it all away.

Maybe if you made something that didn't taste like ass (remember I hate beer) I'd invest :-p
  • Well, I say: invest in me! Sure, I will not bring you any profit, but where do you find such honesty these days, eh?
  • Give me money or I shall destroy all that is near and dear to you.

    Am I doin it rite?
  • My employer is looking for angel investors. High risk, high reward.
