Hello Internet! I have a bit of a request to make. You see, my sister will be in Stonybrook, NY for a large part of the summer studying Sharks and I was wondering, most of you living on or near the East Coast, if one or more of you could show her around. You see I am worried she might have been sheltered (much like myself), having grown up in small-town Utah. It would do a great deal to ease my mind if you could do this for me, and I would be very grateful.

2) Someone in the forums will go, fall in love with your sister, then she will be eaten by sharks in a horrible accident. Then they will make a TV movie about it. The movie will start with this forum thread. My forum post will create a horrific recursion.
Have you talked to her about this, and are you sure she's interested meeting your internet acquaintances especially if she meets people in the real world?
Could I get a list of her Top Ten Fear just in case we meet??? I sometimes dress up in a clown suit to meet people, and I'd like to avoid any awkward moments.
There's a huge difference. Stony Brook is a suburb way out on Long Island. It's about as far away from the City as fucking Garrison, not too far south of Beacon. It's basically just a suburb. Short of pointing out local stores and such, I don't really know what there would be to show her there. There's nothing particularly scary or urban out that way.
Does your sister actually need someone to show her around? Can't she manage on her own?
My recommendation is to go to the Museum of Natural History, because dinosaurs are fucking awesome. Then wander around, find a place to eat, and meet some strangers.
The other sage bit of advice regarding the city is to study the subway and public transit information offered by the MTA before you go into the city. Nothing pisses off a New Yorker more than someone who doesn't know how to use their MetroCard. Well, maybe slow people on the sidewalk.
I would recommend hooking your sister up with the internet. For starters if she is into Twitter, here is the mother lode of NYC twitter accounts: http://www.newyorkology.com/archives/2009/05/nyc_twitter_lis.php
Also, have her add the following websites to an RSS tab and skim it regularly. None of these sites will teach you the basics like how to ride the subway or how to conduct yourself, etc., but they are just NYC-centric sites I find to be good reading.

These people are unbeatable at what they do. As much as I think print media is a huge wast of money, I couldn't even fault anyone for subscribing to the magazine version of this.

And if she somehow decides she wants to play some board games or RPGs while in NY, I can't help but squeeze in another plug for my other home on the internet, NerdNYC: http://nerdnyc.com/
