Help a brother out?

edited June 2010 in Everything Else
Hello Internet! I have a bit of a request to make. You see, my sister will be in Stonybrook, NY for a large part of the summer studying Sharks and I was wondering, most of you living on or near the East Coast, if one or more of you could show her around. You see I am worried she might have been sheltered (much like myself), having grown up in small-town Utah. It would do a great deal to ease my mind if you could do this for me, and I would be very grateful.

  • Asking the internet to help out a sheltered young female in one of the world's largest cities? What could possibly go wrong?

You think I would ask someone I didn't know? I am well acquainted with many people on the forum and only came here because I think I can trust them. It's better than her having to be shown around by a complete stranger.
  • Your sister doesn't know anybody on the Internets?

She spends most of her time socializing with people in real life. I know that must be a shock.

Have you ever met people from the internet? They're fucking weirdos.
  • 1) This sounds a lot like the beginning of Summer Wars. Hey, who wants a job?

    2) Someone in the forums will go, fall in love with your sister, then she will be eaten by sharks in a horrible accident. Then they will make a TV movie about it. The movie will start with this forum thread. My forum post will create a horrific recursion.
  • How young is younger?
Have you talked to her about this, and are you sure she's interested meeting your internet acquaintances especially if she meets people in the real world?
Could I get a list of her Top Ten Fear just in case we meet??? I sometimes dress up in a clown suit to meet people, and I'd like to avoid any awkward moments.

Then she'll be fine. It's sweet that you're concerned for her comfort and well-being, but I bet she'll adapt rather quickly. The New York metro area, in particular, is very friendly if you're the social type. I'm not sure about Stony Brook; I'm not too familiar with that area of Lawn Guyland.
    How young is younger?
Well that didn't take long. :P

She's actually older than me by two years, and she just needs to be shown around.

Wait, show her around where? New York City? Or Stony Brook?

There's a huge difference. Stony Brook is a suburb way out on Long Island. It's about as far away from the City as fucking Garrison, not too far south of Beacon. It's basically just a suburb. Short of pointing out local stores and such, I don't really know what there would be to show her there. There's nothing particularly scary or urban out that way.

I think she would appreciate both or either. She would be in most need of it in NYC, but any help is appreciated.

I would love for what happened in summer wars to happen to me.

^_~ Joyous reassurance for those of us on the west coast who will, undoubtedly, feel the effect of your presence here upon your arrival.

To be fair, I'm hooking you up with my sister when she visits in return.

But then you'd be a girl instead of getting the girl.

True. I had forgotten about that.
  • True. I had forgotten about that.
You won't forget afterwards. My sister and I do share the trait of being somewhat hard to forget.
  • So is no one willing?

It's really an unrealistic request. Nobody here lives in Stony Brook. The East Coast isn't like a bunch of cities all 10 minutes away from each other. It takes me 3 hours of travel to go visit Rym. It takes 1.5 hours to get from Grand Central to Stony Brook.

Does your sister actually need someone to show her around? Can't she manage on her own?
  • I'm 4.5 hours from NYC (less than 4 if I break several laws).

She can probably manage on her own, but if someone was in the area it would be kind of them to teach her a little bit about life on the east coast. If it is inconvenient to you then you are by no means under any obligation from me to assist her, but it would be nice.

Okay, first thing you gotta know about living on the east coast: We Do Not Deal With Bullshit And We Will Not Mince Words.

  • "The East Coast" is also a really, really general term. You're looking for forumites who chill in and around NYC and have the time and transportation (or transportation information) to get your sibling around NYC. I'd say Rym and Scott would be the best as far as location goes, but they will likely be busy with life. I'm sure they can offer tips, as any of us can, but actually showing someone around the city is a Big Deal.
  • Plus, it really isn't all that different. There's no major language barrier so any cultural transitions should be relatively smooth. The best thing about moving somewhere new is just discovering it from yourself, befriending the local people, and learning things gradually. She'll be fine. Don't worry about her.
  • And actually, the best thing to do with regards to New York City is to find a thing you want to do, and then just go do it. There are a lot of people around who are happy to give you directions. Just don't walk around gawking at the tall buildings.

My recommendation is to go to the Museum of Natural History, because dinosaurs are fucking awesome. Then wander around, find a place to eat, and meet some strangers.

The other sage bit of advice regarding the city is to study the subway and public transit information offered by the MTA before you go into the city. Nothing pisses off a New Yorker more than someone who doesn't know how to use their MetroCard. Well, maybe slow people on the sidewalk.
  • But then you'd be a girl instead of getting the girl.
I think it's time you have the talk with your father, Sonic.
    I'd rather be King Kazma.
Scott, you don't need any online avatar to get your ass handed to you.

That jet that just flew over... yeah, you missed it, it got the joke.
  • Ok, so... not even going to pretend to be a veteran master of NYC here, but I know my way around, and a brother asked for help so here goes. Also,I don't know jack shit about Stonybrook NY so lets just put that off the table immediately.

I would recommend hooking your sister up with the internet. For starters if she is into Twitter, here is the mother lode of NYC twitter accounts: http://www.newyorkology.com/archives/2009/05/nyc_twitter_lis.php

Also, have her add the following websites to an RSS tab and skim it regularly. None of these sites will teach you the basics like how to ride the subway or how to conduct yourself, etc., but they are just NYC-centric sites I find to be good reading.

    TimeOut New York: http://newyork.timeout.com/
These people are unbeatable at what they do. As much as I think print media is a huge wast of money, I couldn't even fault anyone for subscribing to the magazine version of this.

    Also...

And if she somehow decides she wants to play some board games or RPGs while in NY, I can't help but squeeze in another plug for my other home on the internet, NerdNYC: http://nerdnyc.com/
