I am four episodes into "My Amazing Boyfriend," a Taiwanese Drama on Dramafever. I read that it is loosely based on "My Love from the Star," which is a Korean Drama I enjoyed. It has enough differences from the Kdrama to be worth watching. The female lead is a famous, plucky actress who cannot act and has awful "luck." Her introduction includes a scene of her about to jump of a building, which normally is not a laughing matter, but I laughed so hard I could barely breath. The male lead is an immortal with a range of powers (NOT a vampire, thank goodness, but he is powered by fluids except salt water and some ancient woo healing) and no real interest in the female lead. Per almost every romantic comedy ever, they are oil and water. Their meet cute involves a car accident wherein his "coffin" is ejected from a van into a puddle of her blood, which he absorbs. Mmmmm, people fluid. He It has a bit of something for everyone (except depth) - humor (loud, slapstick, and ), action, mystery, romance, a higher production value than most Tdramas, and terri-bad special effects that are simultaneously cringe worthy and funny. If you are looking for some light entertainment and don't mind tropes, this show is pretty fun thus far.

  • Schoolgirl Detectives, crazy Korean television. Not quite as good as Vampire Prosecutor (which is actually great, seriously) but Schoolgirl Detectives finds it's bearings pretty quickly. There are a lot of great meta moments too, and it's on Netflix.
  • I watched all of Fargo, season 2, on my flights between Sydney, Hong Kong, and New York.

That is one damn good show.

I've got that in my queue. I'll give it a watch after I finish my current show.
  • I was ready to give up on Game of Thrones, but it's been slightly better than last season so far. Silicon Valley and Jon Oliver continue to be top-notch comedy.

Those are the only weekly shows I watch at the moment. I did finish House of Cards season 4 as my workout show, and holy shit was that a good season. On a whim, I hit play on Jessica Jones since that was the first thing that caught my eye on Netflix mid-workout. Hopefully that show delivers.
  • Last Week Tonight is amazing. Basically the only show I am excited to watch each week. Despite still enjoying it, I feel like Silicon Valley is losing it a little bit. Over the last couple episodes I felt like they were trying to figure out a way to make it have interesting conflict but weren't quite sure how to do it. So they just sort of threw together a derpy one.

Game of Thrones has definitely become a bit more interesting as they at least start drifting off into some better territories and kinda address the more dynamic parts of Ramsay's destruction instead of just having him front and center as Lord Badguy. But he's still a pretty one note character. I dunno, the writing in GoT is a bit questionable at times but never comes across as hokey which I find in a lot of other shows. But damn, they do spectacle so well.
  • So, Archer aired its 7th season (maybe series?) finale today.
    What u think?
  • I've been watching season 2 of Chef's Table. Wow it's freaking amazing, documentary team and various directors have thoroughly beaten season 1 which I really enjoyed too. Each episode quite properly centres on the theme for that particular chef. I'm only up to episode 4 though.

The first 2 episodes really smashed it out of the park in story telling for me while I think the 3rd one would probably speak to my Mother as it focuses on a daughter - father relationship theme.

The fourth episode features a pretty amazing chef who didn't go to culinary school and started off owning a restaurant while not really knowing how to cook. She taught herself and brought recognition for her entire country.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 2 was pretty hysterical. I'd even say it was an improvement from the first season because it gave a lot more depth to our main cast. There are so many times where I had to pause and laugh. "Those santas must be going to a funeral..." It knows how to go that extra route to make it cartoonish or musical for that joke and sticks the landing 99% of the time. I'm glad Tina Fey has another comedy to show off her wonderful comedic timing.

Agreed, I loved the new season. I just get Tina Fey's comedy, which sometimes doesn't strike with others.
  • Aw man season 2 is out? I know what my Saturday is going to be.
  • New Series called "The Reassembler", with James may rebuilding unbuilt stuff. It's also Knolled in a very lovely way, which I appreciate. Honestly, I enjoy just about everything James May does - and oddly, top gear the least of which, especially of late.

Also, as ever, some Air Crash Investigation(Fun facts - more than 15 crashes have been caused by inconsistent UX design), slowly catching up on the last two seasons of mythbusters. Catching the odd episode of various cooking shows - Not that Masterchef bullshit, like the F-word and America's test kitchen. And the Hairy Bikers. Gok Wan's "Made in China" was brilliantly interesting, it doesn't hurt that he's basically the only fashion presenter on TV right now that I can stand. Richard Ayoade's The Gadget Man is hilarious, but not for everyone, I'd think.

The new show from the crew of The Feed, "Weekend shift", is both stupidly funny and a little more on-point than I'd care to admit.

Watched the first episode of New New Top Gear. More comprehensive thoughts another time, but here's the short version - all the whinging Americans who are sad that they've lost their favorite old upper-class Right-wing twit have no fucking clue what they're talking about. It's fine - not as good as Old New Top Gear yet, but fuck man, first episode, give it a chance to settle.
  • The remake of Roots is utter garbage.
Inserting fantastical moment, a heroic tale, poor editing and a random side characters to bring in star power smears an important piece of literature.

Have you checked out his Big wine adventure? Its golden.

Yeah its ok, its not good, but has the potential. The best thing they could do is get rid of Chris Evans, the dude is just the worst.

Naturally, watched the lot. Excellent stuff. The show, not wine in general.

I agree that it wasn't a strong showing for him, but I don't think they should get rid of him. At least, I don't think so yet. This is pretty different to what he's done before, and while they're still getting used to each other, he seems to play well with LeBlanc in interviews, apparently pretty alright chemistry there when he's not doing something he's not used to yet. He apparently also gets on great with the other hosts, according to both the other hosts, and the usual reliable industry scuttlebutt.

(Speaking of - industry scuttlebutt also has it that compared to Clarkson, he's a dream to work with. Not without his troubles by any means, but relatively more pleasant. Descriptions of Clarkson are many and varied, but boil down to "Pompus, arrogant, bull-headed old arse", and my personal favorite to quote verbatim, "Like someone gave Thatcher a penis and a Ferrari." Of course, the usual disclaimers, just rumor, people talk shit about their bosses, and people have opinions that don't necessarily reflect reality.)

I think, really, both Evans and New New Top Gear's biggest flaw, is that it's trying to be TOO Old New Top Gear, and Evans is trying too much to be a replacement Clarkson. They've made big changes, but they need to take that final step, cut the cord, and become their own incarnation of Top Gear, not trying so hard to replicate what's been and gone. That's what brought down TG Australia(Which even Hammond/May/Clarkson called their favorite non-UK Top Gear), that's why US Top Gear sucked so bad for the longest time, and avoiding it is why other non-UK TG properties have succeeded in their markets.

  • Voltron: Legendary Defender premiered today on Netflix. It's from Studio Mir, the animation team behind Avatar. Check it out!
  • Just finished season 1 of the new voltron, and I'm kind of lukewarm on it. On paper this show is made for me (giant robots, wizards, space ships, 5 man squad etc) so I was super hyped for this show. However, despite the fact that it's thrown every thing I love into the show, the characters are really flat. The Avatar crew have generally had a few characters that carried their shows (Azula and Zuko's story, Toph and/or Iroh in any scene, almost everything involving Varric), but none of the characters in this show ever get to the point of being really engaging.

That said, I love the visuals in this show. I really enjoyed Mir's update of the original show's aesthetics and the battles were always really fun to watch.
  • I just watched the first 2 episodes, and it seems to be moving too damn fast.

I think this show is really geared toward kids and kids don't need depth.

    /s ?

I can't think of a show that had kids in its demo that suffered from having depth.

Avatar, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, and Adventure Time would all like to have a word with you.

Gravity falls was fun, but rarely was particularly deep. Adventure time got deeper years after it started, when its core audience was much older. Steven Universe isn't a kids show.

  • QI - How have I never seen this before? It is perfect for having on in the background while focusing on other things. The guests are usually fully, the trivia is as interesting as trivia can be, and Steven Frye is (as always) a delight. Such fun!

  • Yeah, too bad this series is his last.

I checked the first episode, it is quiet good.
I am going to keep watching, I won't binge watch if only because I don't want to wait for a whole year for more episodes.
  • Unnie's Slam Dunk

In the extremely misogynist nation of South Korea someone made a variety show with an all female cast, and they did a terrific job with casting. There is supposed to be some concept about pursuing their dreams, but really it's just six people joking around having a good time.

Yeah, too bad this series is his last.

Isn't Sandi Toksvig taking it over? She's always fun. ^_^

  • The first half of the Night Manager is excellent and I have no doubt that the second half will be equally as great.
  • I just finished up with Mr.Robot. I really liked that every terminal was a real window and they ran real commands. Not gonna go so far as to say it was realistic, as the guy goes into some detail about the methods he uses to get peoples passwords without mentioning anything about hashes he presumably has.
  • Mr. Robot was pretty awesome, I'm still not sure how I feel about the twist vis a vis Mr Dur ... I mean Mr. Robot, but on the whole I was really pleased with the show. I'm really interested in seeing what they have in store for the aftermath of Tyl ... ahem, Mr. Robot's destruction of all the world's debt in season 2.
  • My favourite character was was Patrick Batem... er Tyrell Swedish, and perhaps also Lady Macbeth... er his wife. I've heard somewhere they're making a season 2, I do wonder what they'll do with it.

Yeah the promos are already out for "Season 2.0".
In regards to the hashing and salting of passwords, that might be a bit too far for for a non tech audience. Also just having a hash by itself is not secure. Like MD5 is a joke if you try to use it as the only point of encryption. Bruteforcing a hash is not quite out of the picture if you write something that uses multi-threading and uses your GPU's power.

I like that they are not fake typing this show and the actors have to type out whatever is being written on screen.
  • edited June 2016
I'm a big fan of the real typing they're doing.Fake typing is an immersion breaker the moment I see it in any other media.

While they didn't have to go into detail about the mechanics of password hashing and salting. They could have said some inner monologue like this: In reference to the dude his therapist is dating:

"He has a gmail, last year I used an exploit to get all the passwords of all gmail accounts. It'd be great if that meant I could just waltz right in, but that's not how it works anymore, I still have to guess his password. Only now it'll tell me if I'm right." cut to him successfully guessing and a screen view of welcome guyhehacked'sname Here you'd insert the explanation of how he socially engineered what he needed to get the password the show already had when he hacked this guy.

This is the pettiest of gripes, I know, I think it was an excellent show, in general. I wasn't the biggest fan of the pacing, and I hated almost every character in the show, and there was too much drama, but that's true of nearly every show these days. Overall like 9.5/10
