Online recommendation-based radio (Pandora, Last.fm, etc.)

edited October 2010 in Everything Else
I've never really gotten into any of these more than just listening a bit here and there. Certainly never tried to set up a real station, or take my ratings seriously, or get involved in the social networking aspects. Is it worth it? Are there services besides Pandora and Last.fm that are better, or more worth my time?

  • Not a whole lot. I like Last.fm myself. The social networking is always kind of meh, but the suggestions from Last.fm are usually really good.
  • Slacker is the best one I've encountered.
  • Last.FM is pretty much where it's at. You can go by just picking an artist or keyword to begin with but if you get the client and set it to track what you're listening to, the recommended radio can get really interesting.
  • Eh, no.

I have a Last.fm and use it solely to be notified about concerts I'd be interested in and to see some vaguely interesting statistics about what I've been listening to. I never use the radio.

It really isn't worth it. I just browse my suggested artists, hit torrents, and then listen to them in iTunes.

Do you use the "scrobbler" thing? I was using the itunes plugin for a little while before I switched to Windows 7, so it's got a few recommendations in there. Apparently I was on some kind of goth/industrial kick at the time.

  • Yeah. Scrobbling is the only way to go.
  • I've been using last.fm lately because I can use it on my Xbox too.

The "concert feature" is really good. Especially since you can export the the events you are going to as a calendar file which gets update whenever you add another event.
  • I use Pandora on a daily basis.
