I have delved into the deep black heart of the earth, and found it was filled with the warn glow of her blood, the cold tears of her joy, and the black stone of her resolve. I tremble to think of what we can do with these riches.
The Freemines were originally discovered by an enterprising explorer and miner named MacRoss in the early generations of Secondus. MacRoss stumbled across a large cave in the side of a mountain to the North while exploring the world. The one simple cave opened up to more and more natural cavities filled with coal and iron ore. While exploring and hauling minerals to the surface, MacRoss came to a precipice that fell sharply and suddenly away into the deep of the earth. At the very bottom, hundreds of feet into the dark below, was the faint glow of lava. Fueled by curiosity, the explorer's spirit, and the desire for valuable minerals, MacRoss began to carve a stairway down into the depths of the great shaft. Natural underground rivers fell from the walls as MacRoss delved deeper, and iron and gold sparkled in the walls. After days of carefully excavating, MacRoss finally hit the bottom of the shaft and was surrounded by fire and water. Lava pools, lava falls, natural springs, and the fine black gleam of acres of obsidian. After days of mining all he could carry, Macross realized that the riches of the great shaft were more than any one person could ever hope to collect. Instead of hoarding the natural riches, MacRoss went back to Secondus and posted signs and directions to the mine and the shaft. Because he opened the mines up to everyone and allowed anyone to take anything they wanted, the locals named the place The Freemines. Wanting to take some credit for helping the population, MacRoss placed a sign at the top of the shaft, naming it after himself. The mines and the shaft are still rich in minerals to this day, and can be found following Destrucci's Way north of Secondus. While still used as a mine, the Freemines are most noted for the retention of their natural form and beauty.
The New Sirako Foreign Legion, Icarus, Acrae, and the lost library beneath the sands.
The people of New Sirako, after having built their city up to be the preeminent city in the world (under the leadership of Emperor Kiey,) decided that they needed to start looking outside their borders. This was due to the mines underneath the city beginning to run low on the strategic resources that the city desperately needed. This land grab for resources was explained to the people of New Sirako as a way to bring their prosperity to the rest of the world.
Thus the Emperor enacted a number of decisions to help them get what they needed. Firstly he established the New Sirako Foreign Legion, who would act as their expeditionary force. Exploring untamed foreign lands for signs of resources that could then be brought back to the city.
After the construction of New Sirako's first naval ship, a caravel, the first expedition of the force was sent to the land across the New Sirako Bay. There they constructed a small fort that would serve as their base of operations in the area. However the land there proved to be unsuitable for their needs and was nearly abandoned, but the Emperor instead had a large vault like structure built on top of a hill. Inside of it was stored all the riches of New Sirako, and it was meant as a symbol of New Sirako's immense power and wealth.
During the "Bay Expedition," the Emperor began work on his second decision, the construction of the Icarus. The Icarus was designed to be like nothing that had come before, a ship that floated not on the sea but on the air. With the Icarus, New Sirako was able to more efficiently search the world for the resources they needed, as well as rain death down on anyone in the area they wanted.
But soon their priorities quickly changed with the discovery of some pillars sticking out of a sand dune. A base camp was soon established nearby these ruins by the New Sirako Foreign Legion, much like what they had done during the "Bay Expedition." Which would serve as a place for workers to live while they uncovered the ruins. It did not take very long for the workers to discover that what they had stumbled across were part of the ruins of an ancient city, their ancient city that their people had long since been forced to leave hundreds of years earlier, El al-Sirako.
With this discovery the Emperor changed his priorities from gathering strategic resources to excavating this ruin. The foreign legion base camp was now made into a makeshift colony called Acrae. Some work was done to the city of Acrae to help accommodate the increased traffic it was getting, but most of the focus of the work was on the ruins.
After much work the excavators discovered was the old capitol's great library, at least a small section of what had been the great library. Inside they found untold amounts of ancient books and scrolls. As well as 3 small biomes representing earth (a forest,) wind (a desert,) and water (an iced over pond.) How they managed to build these biomes inside the library is still unclear, especially considering that they have lasted as long as they have without any outside interference. In some of the literature found in the library workers found references to a forth biome representing fire, but it's location is still unkown.
In a pocket of stone far below the surface, the lights shine.
For centuries, pilgrims have journeyed to the Cave of a Thousand LIghts, placing votives and seeking to have prayers answered. Legend says that when a torch is placed, then once -- just once -- the gods shall grant a wish for a single item.

All glory to Andrew, create of the caverns.
