Upgrade to Smart Phone

So for my birthday this year I wanted to make the upgrade to a smart phone. My carrier is Verizon.

My main use having the Internet handy is to maximize the video and picture apps to make the best use of Twitter. I'd prefer a flippable keyboard as opposed to the touch screens. Beyond that, I have no preferences. I'm going to start browsing but wanted to throw it out to the collective first.

Suggestions?

  • If you're intent on staying with Verizon, either the Droid X (Which is one of those "dinner plate" Android phones that's got the huge screen) or the iPhone.
  • I have been told by the people who deal with cell phones that all Motorola phones are very picky about the cables they'll let you use to charge. I have a dinky flip phone which will not charge with any mini USB cable, it HAS to be the Motorola approved one, as an example.
  • If you're going to go with iPhone you might want to wait a little while and see if the iPhone 5 is coming to Verizon or not. Otherwise Droids are good as a whole, though I've heard of some people having issues with Droid X's dying but I don't know if thats still a problem.
  • I believe that right now is a very bad time to be picking up a Droid X or Droid 2. The rate at which new, more powerful, phones with much better battery life are coming out is making it hard to even keep abreast of what is newly available weekly. 6 months ago, I would have said Droid all the way but that is getting to be an old phone compared to what has recently become available and what is knocking on the door. Basically, a similar sentiment to what ninjarabbi said about the iPhone.
