Complete noob, looking for anime 101

edited April 2011 in Anime
Hi everyone,

Sorry, this is extremely basic, but I am wondering if Geeknights has done a podcast explaining the different types of anime? I am assuming there are different types of anime, and that manga and hentai are types of anime. If they are, I'm not sure what the differences between them are. My apologies if I am incorrect and way off in my thinking.

These are not shows to recommend someone that wants to sample animation.

@bodtchboy, if you'd like to get some suggestions (though do listen to the show linked above me first) you could give some names or genres of other media you enjoy.
  • Azumanga Daioh is great for comedy.

Maybe for some people, but Initial D helped me get into anime.

    Anime You Should Watch:
    Porco Rosso.

I'm assuming that you like airplanes, World War I-era dogfighting, and air pirates. If not, kindly go die in a fire.

But really, watch Trigun and Cowboy Bebop.

I have a love for Gungrave.

    Summary:
Orphaned blood brothers insinuate themselves into the Japanese mob. Then there are zombie monsters.

  • Ok, you people suck at recommending anime. This dude has never watched anime before. These are things you have suggested that he should absolutely NOT watch without more anime experience:

    Here is Greenwood
    Initial D
Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still ( Giant Robot Science Fiction)
    Twelve Kingdoms (Same-as-above Fantasy)
Fist of the North Star ( '80s Movie) (Well animated, Ultra-Violent, Post-Apocalyptic, Action)
    Moribito* (Fantasy)
    Baccano* (1930's Mob story)
    Eden of the East*
FLCL* (I don't even know/Coming of age story)
    Azumanga Daioh
    Gungrave

I mean seriously. Some of these are good, or even great, shows. But you honestly think a noob should watch them? Are you even thinking about this at all?

Kid. Start with the Studio Ghibli movies and the big sci-fi movies like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. Then come back and ask again.
  • I have a love for Gungrave.

Ahh. Thanks Sonic! So is manga also an animation style (meaning comic book style animation tv shows/movies? Would Secret of Kells be considered manga, or anime?

*edit* sorry, I tried to respond after the 1st post, but I couldn't remember the name of the movie I was thinking of (The Secret of Kells) so by the time I posted this, so had everyone else. Thanks for the help, everyone!

No. Manga is comic books that are Japanese. You know, on paper. Has nothing to do with anime.

Secret of Kells is French/Irish. It has nothing to do with anime/manga. It's a European animated movie.
  • @Apreche

Ok, thanks. I saw the animation style of Secret of Kells and it reminded me of Samurai Jack. Thought maybe it would be considered anime or at least akin to anime.

Samurai Jack has nothing to do with anime.
  • @Zack,

I tried watching Gundam about 12 years ago, but life was so busy, I couldn't get into it. Just this past year, I watched Ponyo with the kids and I discovered I strangely wanted to watch it all the time. Then a friend loaned me Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, both of which I watched with the kids (ages 5 & 3) and liked Howl's. Took me a couple of times to appreciate Spirited Away, but I eventually liked it. My son and I just began watching Avatar: The Last Airbender and we're liking it.

That is the extent of my anime, unless Pokemon, Robotech and Voltron are considered anime.
  • Urotsukidōji or Legend of the Overfiend is fun for the whole family. Invite Grandma over and watch it!!
  • And yes Pokemon Robotech and Voltron are all anime. But Voltron was edited from GoLion. Which is way cooler.

Oh, ok. Sorry about that. I better listen to the podcast noted above so I can distinguish anime from other stuff.

Thanks again, everyone. I have my neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso queued up on my Netflix. I also came across a bunch of more adult anime and watched the first 10 minutes of Claymore, but got interrupted.

Though all the other recommendations sound great, I'll add Trigun and Cowboy Beebop to the top of the list as well. I listened to the Cowboy Beebop podcast a while back. Question: Should you see the Cowboy Beebop series prior to the Cowboy Beebop movie?
  • Question: Should you see the Cowboy Beebop series prior to the Cowboy Beebop movie?
    Yes.
  • Question: Should you see the Cowboy Beebop series prior to the Cowboy Beebop movie?
Doesn't really matter too much. The film is really just a long, high-budget episode that stands perfectly fine on its own. Even if you haven't seen the TV series. I myself really got into anime after watching the Cowboy Bebop film. Only until some time later did I watch the TV series. The best suggestion for watching order I've seen is to watch episodes 1-22 first, then the film, then the remaining episodes for the TV series. But if it's easier to see the film, there's nothing wrong with that.

I don't think the movie really introduces you to the characters at all.
  • Ok, I just finished listening to the podcast. Great podcast! And now I think I understand what some of you were saying.

Let's say I enjoyed movies like Saving Private Ryan, Chronicles of Riddick, Star Wars, some of the Star Trek movies, Serenity and some super hero movies. What anime movies would you recommend that resemble some of those?

    Some more recent series:

Gundam MS 8th Team (Series not the movie, more character based with the robots not the main focus.)
Big O (has a batman feel to with with giant robots)
Crest/Banner of the Stars ( space opera )
Black Lagoon ( Good action with decent story )

NOO, not for noobs. Hella not for noobs.

I'm in a similar anime-lacking situation. All I've seen is:
    Cowboy Bebop
Fist of the North Star (only the first 10 episodes so far, there are >100)
    Paranoia Agent
    Tokyo Godfathers
    Paprika
    Millenium Actress
    Ghost in the Shell
    My Neighbor Totoro
the south park episode in anime style
small amounts of Yu-Gi-Oh and Avatar: The Last Airbender when I was younger.

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes
    Five Star Stories OVA
    Golgo 13
Also none of which are for newbs!
  • @Apreche I know so many people who's first anime was FLCL. Baccano is definately noob friendly if they like Tarantino or Richie movies, and Moribito is just like Miyazaki but in TV format.
  • Seriously, people; if somebody came in here looking to get into PC games I would not hand them Quake 3, STALKER, Europa Universalis and Dwarf Fortress.
