Ice Hockey World Cup 2011

edited May 2011 in Everything Else
This SUNDAY Sunday sunday! The best possible final: Sweden -- Finland. We may hate the Russians more, and we may fear the Checks more, but the abject envy/loathing/love/hate relationship we share makes high level Ice Hockey matches between Finland and Sweden the stuff of legend.

Here is the stupidly well done 1-0 goal from the semifinals against Russia:

  • Peripherally observed the tournament. It's kind of the red-headed step-child of ice hockey, because it happens while the NHL playoffs are still going, and a lot of top players in the world aren't appearing in it due to that or because they simply don't want to. Sometimes teams even more or less forbid them from participating due to the risk of injury.

Anyway, Austria of course got their asses handed to them. Austria's really in a bad spot: Too bad for the top ranks, and too bad for the rank below. Didn't really help that none of the NHL players they have participated.
  • Nice goal!
  • World here, nobody but northern North America cares.

End of first period: Sweden scores 1-0
End of second period: Finland scores 1-1
Third period: SHIT GOT REAL! Finland scores two times right at the start!

Also the foreign ministers of Finland and Sweden bantering on Twitter about peace between the nations after the match.

So at 2:00 AM I walk the couple of blocks down to the market square to take some videos

And in case you guys still don't get how big of a deal this is in Finland; this was just the spontaneous ad hoc party, tonight there is an even bigger organized party at the same place with the team and celebrities. The army is sending a fighter jet escort for the plane carrying the team back to Finland. Scaled to US proportions viewership of the final would be 150 million (~40% higher than the SuperBowl).

  • OK last update to this solo thread. Nice panorama picture of the official victory party. Estimates are at 100k people, compared to NYC that would mean 1.5 million people showing up in Battery Park, or (since a lot of people travelled from across Finland to be there) 7 million if you compare National populations.

BTW, Timo, that was quite the tumble into the trophy your goalie coach took:

Yup, the trophy is pretty much toast by now, the handles have broken off and there are dents and the base is crooked. It is, however, not the original which is in safekeeping with the IIHF.
