I have to agree. I haven't seen a single intelligent Republican candidate, and I think following John McCain's loss, we're never going to get a normal candidate ever again. They're gonna go full-on Fox News, and so I'm basically distancing myself from the party at this point.
I'm rooting for Romney, but if I was betting money it would be on Obama. I think Romney would have a better policy, which is why he can't get on the ticket.

I'm legitimately curious, what policy of Romney's is do you think is better? All I ask is that everyone tries to discuss this as civilly as possible. #yeahrightgoodluck
Not getting into it. Last time I tried, everyone in the forum attacked me as viciously and barbarically as they do on the rest of the internet; and I'm going to be offline for the next 12 days, so I won't even be able to try to combat it.

When he was governor of Massachusetts, he seemed vaguely reasonable. I'm not sure if the same can be said for candidate Romney in the current national political atmosphere, though. Look what it did to theoretically smartish John McCain last time around.

I really don't understand why so many people say this in regards to their past support of the Republican Party. In the case of Moral Conservatism this seems to boil down to: "I just want to regulate your sex lives a little bit, but not quite as much as those crazies over there." Financial Conservatism I have two gripes with. Everyone, left or right, should be careful about making sure we have a balanced budget, and I don't know why fiscal responsibility is still seen as a Conservative thing. However, conservatives seem convinced that we should never share things as a society. I don't get this. Just tell me, what did the Republicans do for you before that you liked better than the more progressive elements in the government?
Holy sweet fuck, between Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann, Ron Paul and the guy quoting Pokemon songs, if the GOP wins in 2012 I think we can officially declare the Great American Experiment a failure. He said like as if who people vote for actually has a real impact on how the world is run

I guess I've always just personally valued hard work a lot, and it always bothered me that it seemed like a lot of liberals tended to say "The rich people shouldn't make as much money as they do", and it seemed to me like everyone should pay the same percentage of taxes, you know? I understand for richer people, it meant that the taxes affected them less, but I just always said that it was the benefit of being wealthy, that if you could make that much money you deserved that. I also saw Liberals wanting to raise taxes, and I saw that my family personally couldn't deal with it and that we are always struggling for money, yet my parents always said that the kind of tax cuts Obama was proposing would affect us. While I don't like the constant raising of taxes, after some time I am willing to accept that it has to happen. For me, it just seems like the Republican party has finally become COMPLETELY out of touch with reality and the actual issues. John McCain actually seemed to understand what was going on and just had a different approach than Obama, one that a lot of people didn't think would work, and that's fine. The new Republican candidates don't even understand what the problem is, and so I'm just done with it all.
And I didn't care about their moral conservatism, I don't want to regulate people's lives. Just keep the porn off daytime television and I'm good.

I wouldn't bother. He's not crazy, stupid and evil enough to appeal to the Republican base and he's committed too many thought crimes for anyone on the left to vote for him. If the Dems lose in 2012, it will be because someone runs to challenge Obama in the primaries, splits the party and makes them "look weak".
Herman Caine quoted the opening song of Pokemon 2000 during a debate.

What about "generational millionaires", who never worked for their riches? What about the fact that, even if you go by percentages, the amount it would take to affect me is much less than the amount it would take to affect, say, Rym? Also, you're talking primarily about income taxes, I assume. What about capital gains, which is how most millionaires maintain a day-to-day income? Is it fair to tax them at a different rate? Is the estate tax fair? How about a tax on lump-sum bonuses? Is it fair to tax them over a certain amount? "Taxes" is a broad term, and a lot of politicians use it as a blanket term to mean one thing when everyone they're talking to can reasonably assume it's another.
And it's a mischaracterization of most "liberal's" point to say that they/we think that "the rich people shouldn't be making as much as they do". It's more like "They have a much bigger cushion, so let's take more stuffing out of a few of their chairs and use it to make some beds for these people over here."
I understand for richer people, it meant that the taxes affected them less, but I just always said that it was the benefit of being wealthy, that if you could make that much money you deserved that.
The fallacy here is that the wealthy got rich because they worked hard. Many of the wealthy elite inherited their fortune. Six of the top 15 richest Americans inherited their wealth (of note is the Koch brothers, key players in the Tea Party movement). Funny that those that inherited are the strongest supporters of Republican policy.

This. I can't stand the inherited wealthy whining about poorer people 'not working hard enough'.
Also, this hasn't been brought up yet, but immigration needs to get better. My mom, a pretty staunch Republican on most issues, voted for Democrats several times, just because they promised to help immigration get easier. We should make it easier. Kind've hypocritical to have a giant statue asking for some huddled masses, when we also deport kid's moms. ugh. My mom comes home sporadically with really sad tales of kids she works with who have deported relatives. People against immigration are just xenophobic. honestly. Or looking to capitalize on their plight. Like meatpackers.

Good republican presidents since 1900 :-p
More of a Progressive, one of the first presidents to bring up Universal healthcare, created the national park system and busted the trusts plus this story
"While Roosevelt was campaigning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 14, 1912, a saloonkeeper named John Schrank shot him, but the bullet lodged in his chest only after penetrating his steel eyeglass case and passing through a thick (50 pages) single-folded copy of the speech he was carrying in his jacket. Roosevelt, as an experienced hunter and anatomist, correctly concluded that since he wasn't coughing blood, the bullet had not completely penetrated the chest wall to his lung, and so declined suggestions he go to the hospital immediately. Instead, he delivered his scheduled speech with blood seeping into his shirt. He spoke for 90 minutes. His opening comments to the gathered crowd were, "Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose." Afterwards, probes and x-ray showed that the bullet had traversed three inches (76 mm) of tissue and lodged in Roosevelt's chest muscle but did not penetrate the pleura, and it would be more dangerous to attempt to remove the bullet than to leave it in place. Roosevelt carried it with him for the rest of his life."
Was a pretty decent and Honest guy, never wanted the job, didn't to anything too crazy other then pardon Nixon which probably was a good idea overall. (Nixon wasn't that bad of a dude when you look at his record as well, some consider Nixon the last liberal president)
Created the national highway system, enlarged Social Security, ended the war in Korea, he also pushed to end racial discrimination. Also as a former General in his last speech as president warned of the rise of the Military Industrial complex.
I'd even throw in the first Bush if I had too but while he was smart about Iraq and foreign policy and he of course raised taxes :-p (probably the last republican president to ever admit to something like that :-p)
So it's not like there wasn't bad republican presidents in the past. I just don't see any of the qualities of the above listed presidents in ANY of the republican candidates. I don't think that republican party even exists anymore.
