  • Ugh, we are at 100 year flood levels around here...What happens if you have more then one 100 year flood in a 100 year period?
I don't know, I'll get back to you after this storm season comes through.

With all major transportation shut down, does this mean you guys have a "hurricane day" on Monday?

Just saying... That would be awesome!

  • All these people around the world talking about how shitty it is for Americans to run all Hurricane stuff on the news for the last 72 hours. Who would have thought that America was important to Americans?
  • Obviously not American politicians. They only worry about gettn' their own, while the gettin' is good.

I think the news networks where really happy to have something other than politics to talk about. Good 'ole natural disaster hysteria.

I've not heard that - the only thing I've heard is some people bitching about how WE have an update on the American hurricanes every hour on the hour. We don't need to know, once or twice a day is enough.

I was commenting specifically about someone accusing America of wining to the world about our hurricane. Last time I checked we didn't control the world's media. Maybe tthat guy should contact his local media and tell them to stop obsessing over America. :)
  • We are good here. Friend in DC lost power, but ours barely blinked. There is severe flooding in other areas, but we are pretty well upland here.

Most of the casualties were from people being stupid. Probably would have been a lot more if there hadn't been so many evacuations. Get the people who are likely to do stupid shit out of the flood zones, and your death/injury count goes waaaay down.
  • No problems here in Albany, other than the dogs really didn't like being outside.
Windy and rainy, but not terrible.
  • Yeah, I've actually dealt with stronger gusts on non-hurricane days.

But it's still a good idea to minimize travel.

And if you do travel PUT ON YOUR FUCKING HEADLIGHTS WTF PEOPLE.
  • While we didn't have many issues in our particular neighborhood, apparently there are many areas of massive flooding throughout our area, wide spread power outages, downed trees, and even a few deaths. An acquaintance of our lives on top of a mountain in Middleburgh, NY. Her area is where people evacuate to in a flood, but she is experiencing over 5 feet of flooding and fast moving waters over her 40+ acres. The saddest aspect in her case is that her gardens are her livelihood and they have literally washed away.

When the round-the-clock news guys ran out of things to say on air toward the end there, they started talking about the "devastating wind gusts of up to 30 mph" and I started laughing my ass off.

  • Delmar is fine.

Troy is getting F'ed in the A. Some friends and coworkers needed to evacuate, Lock 7 may burst, and the Postenkill may break soon. Most importantly, Dinosaur BBQ is flooded... Fuck you Irene.
  • To Albany people: They closed the Twin Bridges and are about to close the Route 9 (Crescent) Bridge.

    NOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOO
  • Wait, there is still a storm? I was pretty sure once it passed New York City it just disappears off the map.

That surprised me too. So I just took a quick look, and CNN says (of the Connecticut Valley) "Though the flash flood threat had largely abated, some of the larger rivers had not yet crested."
  • Schoharie and Montgomery Counties are just extensions of the river at this point. The images of that area are truly heartbreaking. While it is more sparsely populated than other areas, a lot of those communities rely on small local businesses and farms for their livelihood.
  • Wow, that's quite the disaster you guys have going on there. Who would have thought DC was going to be the safe place to be this storm. >_>

Yeah, this is pretty bad. There was a mudslide in Troy; friends of mine live two blocks away from where it hit. They were unaffected, but some homes are just wrecked.

EDIT: That picture of Ryan's Wake is absolutely terrifying. I know how tall that patio is.

EDIT 2: Windham got it pretty bad too.

And Jumpin' Jacks is about 2/3 submerged. At least Dinosaur isn't completely submerged...yet.

  • You think that is bad, check out the flooding in Vermont. I've got 3 friends up there who are entirely cut off from everything.
  • Man, god is really punishing you guys for tolerating the gays. :P

They must be evil in a way we don't fully understand yet. Why else would God be punishing them, right? We should arrest them all for waging war against God! ... in secret!

  • Clearly that is god's will. Purge the heretics!
  • Pics of flooding in Troy NY
Thanks for that. The Times Union has a big collection of photos and almost none of them are of Troy. Though it does look like most of the damage is confined to flooding along the river front.
Didn't really expect the Hudson to get quite this high, though I'm not too surprised. Good luck with the clean up.

I couldn't make this up if I tried.
ALBANY, N.Y. - The Twin Bridges on the Northway temporarily shut down Monday after a 40 ft. long barge was traveling down the Mohawk River uncontrollably.
The Twins, along with the Route 9 Halfmoon Bridge, shut down at 2:30 p.m. Monday. A barge coming from the Forts Ferry area carrying a 30 ft. tall crane was in the path of running directly into the bridges.
Crews were able to stop the barge about 25 minutes later, and tie it up at the edge of the Mohawk River with plans to permanently secure it.
Is it just me or does this sound like the plot of a Keanu Reeves moive?

That is the funniest, most clever thing I've ever heard you say. Bravo.

BTW, I watched a lot of The Weather Channel over the last few days. They ran a lot of "jenny Craig" or some such commercials with Carrie Fisher. WHAT HAPPENED TO HER? Did she have a stroke or something? Why is her speech so slurred?
